Four days into her new job, she heard someone walking above the shop. Her boss barely reacted. The upstairs rooms were used for storage, and the footsteps were something she would probably get used to.

But it became harder to get used to a voice when she knew she was alone. Harder still when she heard a child crying and couldn’t find anyone who needed help. Her coworkers had learned to work around the sounds. She was beginning to wonder whether she could keep the job.

Then a customer stopped at the counter and asked about the upstairs.

The stranger claimed someone there wanted her attention—and had something to tell her. It was an unsettling explanation from someone she had only just met. Could she trust it? And what if the presence she’d been afraid of knew exactly how she felt?
