Dr. Gabor Maté: The Hidden Trauma Behind Addiction (From the Vault) #732

Dr. Gabor Maté: The Hidden Trauma Behind Addiction (From the Vault) #732

Dr. Gabor Maté on Addiction, Trauma, Parenting, Technology & Finding Your Vitality

What if addiction isn't really about the thing we're addicted to?

In this thought-provoking episode from the vault, I sit down with renowned physician, author and addiction expert Dr. Gabor Maté for a wide-ranging conversation about addiction, trauma, childhood, parenting, technology, consciousness and what it means to live a more vital life.

Gabor challenges the conventional way we think about addiction. He argues that addiction isn't simply about drugs or alcohol — it can involve work, shopping, gambling, sex, pornography, exercise, food, technology and almost any behaviour that provides temporary relief or pleasure but ultimately has negative consequences.

At the heart of his approach is a powerful question: what is the addiction trying to do for you?

Gabor explains how he sees addiction as an attempt to cope with suffering, often rooted in unresolved childhood experiences and trauma. He also talks candidly about his own addictive behaviours and why understanding rather than shaming ourselves can be an important part of change.

The conversation then moves into parenting and childhood trauma, including why children sometimes "act out", the importance of emotional connection, and why discipline doesn't necessarily have to mean punishment.

And remarkably, much of what Gabor says about technology and screen addiction feels even more relevant today. He discusses smartphones, social media, distraction and the danger of using technology as an emotional substitute — particularly for children.

There's also a revealing discussion about consciousness, choice, self-awareness and how we might reconnect with the natural vitality and energy that Gabor believes is already within us.

Recorded several years ago, this is one of my favorite conversations from the podcast — and listening back, it's striking how many of these ideas continue to resonate.

In this episode:
• What addiction really is — and why it isn't just about drugs
• Addiction, trauma and childhood experiences
• Why we develop addictive behaviours
• How shame can make addiction harder to overcome
• Consciousness, choice and personal agency
• Parenting and the emotional needs of children
• Why children "act out"
• Discipline versus punishment
• Technology, smartphones and screen addiction
• Social media and the loss of genuine connection
• How childhood experiences can affect adult behaviour
• Finding your natural energy, creativity and vitality
• Gabor's recommendation for a life-changing book
