George Rafferty Left His Poker Game. His Dog Came Back on Torn Paws.

George Rafferty Left His Poker Game. His Dog Came Back on Torn Paws.

George Rafferty shoveled his neighbors' walkways before the snow stopped falling and was gone before anyone could look out and thank him. One neighbor kept a photograph of him standing in the cleared path with his dog, Biscuit. At roughly two in the morning on a Thursday in December two thousand fourteen, Biscuit came out of the dark onto Interstate seventy-four with injured paws, three miles from where his owner lay. Nobody had reported George missing. The dog was the only reason anyone started looking.

George Rafferty was fifty-two years old, a senior estimator at Delwood Greenway Construction and a nineteen-year resident of Harmon Falls, Illinois. He was last seen leaving his regular Wednesday poker game on Sutter Avenue at about nine fifteen in the evening on December tenth, two thousand fourteen. His body was found on the Delwood Greenway on December thirteenth. The medical examiner, Doctor Susan Parrish, recorded fatal blunt-force injuries to the back of the head.

Leon Brooks, placed at the same company by a staffing agency to coordinate subcontracted labor, had been using its GPS fleet portal to open George's vehicle history, and had been demanding money from a prepaid phone over invoice discrepancies that came from documents Brooks himself had handled. A search of his storage unit on Hartwell Pike on December twenty-second recovered the inscribed wristwatch George's daughter and her mother had given him, and a hammer bearing his blood. Brooks was arrested on December twenty-eighth and denied everything until the fourth day of his trial, when he gave a recorded statement admitting the extortion and the killing.

On November nineteenth, two thousand fifteen, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Brooks also claimed he had taken belongings from other people who died. Detectives reviewed the deaths of Walter Price in Macon, Georgia, in two thousand seven and Steve Olmsted in Decatur, Illinois, in two thousand ten. Neither review produced a charge, and the original rulings in those two deaths, an accidental drowning and a fall in a parking structure, still stood when this account closes in January two thousand sixteen.

This episode is a work of fiction. George Rafferty, Leon Brooks, Harmon Falls and the investigation around them are invented. The account follows the ordinary shape of a homicide inquiry, from the first canvass and the phone and vehicle records to the search warrant, the trial and the files that stayed open afterward.
