Marie Powell Went Up With Her Groceries. Her Coat Was on the Fence.

Marie Powell Went Up With Her Groceries. Her Coat Was on the Fence.

Marie Powell remembered every volunteer's birthday at the food pantry where she showed up every Tuesday at seven thirty, and kept them written on index cards. She updated her budget every Sunday and had paid a deposit on an apartment in Lisbon for October. On a February morning at fourteen below zero, the burgundy coat she wore every winter was hanging on a chain link fence nine feet from her building, in snow with no footprints. The man who hung it there would later explain everything except that.

---

Marie Powell, forty-eight, of Kellerton, Ohio, was last recorded entering her building at eight fifty-one in the evening on February eighth, carrying groceries and wearing the coat. She was found the next afternoon four hundred meters away, beneath a collapsed wooden snow fence above the river; Doctor Philip Okafor determined she had been strangled. Her bank records showed twenty-three cash withdrawals over seven months, made after messages threatened to send altered pantry invoices to her employer and to other volunteers — an accusation the pantry's own records disproved. Jason Sawyer, thirty-two, a Braddock Logistics driver whose route included the pantry, admitted strangling Marie and said he had panicked. He was also charged with the murder of Sandra Birch, forty-four, reported missing the previous October and found on February twenty-first in a drainage canal behind an industrial park. Sawyer denied killing Sandra. A jury convicted him on both counts, and Judge Caroline Marsh imposed two life sentences without parole, to run consecutively. His initial appeal was denied.

---

This case is fiction, written for True Crime 24 Hours, and the episode says so in the first minute. The names, the town, the companies and the records in it are invented. The story is told from the case file it imagines: the detectives' notes, the pantry's invoices and delivery records, the bank and phone evidence, and the testimony heard at trial.
