Vanuatu Hit by 6.3-Magnitude Earthquake, US Agency Says

A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake with a shallow depth rattled the waters off central Vanuatu's coast on Thursday, October 8, 2026, as documented by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic event took place at 8:00 p.m. local time (09:00 UTC) at just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the surface. The quake's epicenter was positioned approximately 102 kilometers (63 miles) to the northeast of Norsup in Malampa province and roughly 110 kilometers east of Luganville. Fortunately, no deaths, major structural destruction, or landslide hazards have surfaced, and officials ruled out any tsunami risk from this occurrence.

The USGS released a "Green alert," signaling an exceptionally low probability of fatalities or substantial infrastructure harm. Around 8,000 residents reportedly experienced "very strong" ground motion, while approximately 6,000 more felt intense shaking closer to the central islands. Personnel at the Chinese Embassy in Port Vila, the nation's capital, reported that they did not perceive the tremors.

Vanuatu is a breathtaking, Y-shaped island nation situated in the South Pacific, approximately 1,100 miles (1,770 km) away from Australia to the east and positioned west of Fiji. Known formally as the Republic of Vanuatu, this Melanesian island chain comprises 83 islands (with roughly 65 inhabited), featuring Port Vila—its capital and primary economic center—on the island of Éfaté.

The nation enjoys a tropical climate characterized by a warm, humid season spanning November through April and a milder, drier stretch from May to October. Given its geographic position, Vanuatu faces considerable exposure to natural hazards, regularly encountering intense earthquakes and destructive tropical cyclones.
