Fall Asleep to The Mount Shasta Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Mount Shasta Mystery

A 4,322-metre stratovolcano at the southern end of the Cascade Range, rising 3,000 metres above the surrounding valley floor in Siskiyou County, northern California. Not one mountain but four — overlapping volcanic cones built over 590,000 years, the oldest buried beneath the youngest, the western flank carrying Shastina, a satellite cone large enough to rank as the third-biggest stratovolcano in the Cascades on its own. Roughly 300,000 years ago the north face collapsed in one of the largest volcanic debris avalanches known on Earth, sending 45 cubic kilometres of rock 64 kilometres down the Shasta River valley. The mountain rebuilt itself. It has erupted at least eleven times in the past 10,000 years, most recently around 1250 CE. The USGS considers it one of the most potentially hazardous volcanoes in the United States. It is not extinct.

Seven named glaciers drape the upper slopes — the largest glacial system on any Cascade volcano and the most extensive ice in California. The Hotlum Glacier alone covers 2.5 square kilometres. For decades several of these glaciers defied regional retreat trends, holding steady or advancing while glaciers across the American West shrank, possibly because the mountain stands alone, intercepting Pacific storms with no upstream competition and wringing out more snowfall than any neighbouring peak. At its base, Big Springs discharges 100 million gallons per day — snowmelt and glacial melt filtered through volcanic rock for 15 to 50 years, emerging at a constant 4 degrees Celsius, feeding the headwaters of the Sacramento River. The mountain is a reservoir, a cloud factory producing stacked lenticular formations that glow at sunrise and sunset, and the source of a century of stories about strange lights and hidden civilisations that are almost certainly the atmospheric byproducts of a volcano this visually extraordinary.

Four volcanoes wearing the shape of one mountain. Seven glaciers in slow retreat. A hundred million gallons of water a day moving through darkness inside the rock. The Gorda Plate sliding beneath you at the speed your fingernails grow, feeding magma into chambers that have not finished their work. The fumaroles are venting. The springs are flowing. The glaciers are creaking. The lenticular clouds may or may not be forming above the summit. The mountain does not know about the town at its base or the century of mythology draped over its slopes. It is doing what volcanoes do — building, collapsing, erupting, building again — on a timescale that makes human stories look like a single breath. Rest.
