Episode 32: why colonoscopy often misses bowel endometriosis

This clinical study investigated the effectiveness of colonoscopy in detecting intestinal endometriosis among patients already diagnosed with deep pelvic endometriosis. Researchers evaluated 174 female patients by comparing their preoperative colonoscopic findings against the gold standards of video laparoscopy and histopathological examination. The findings revealed that colonoscopy demonstrated a very low sensitivity rate of seven percent and frequently missed instances of bowel involvement because the endometrial tissue rarely infiltrated the mucosal layer. Consequently, the authors concluded that because colonoscopy is an invasive procedure with poor diagnostic accuracy for this specific condition, it should not be utilized as a routine diagnostic tool for assessing bowel endometriosis.
