Is There An Antidote To Stress? with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

Is There An Antidote To Stress? with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

We’re up against a chronic epidemic: stress. In fact, it’s estimated that 80% or more of doctors’ visits are due to illnesses related to stress. This can come in many different forms. Socioeconomic stress is a real burden for many people, as is the stress of taking care of several generations within a family, or meeting the demands of our jobs. Stress can also come in the form of bad food and poor or inadequate sleep, which send negative signals to the brain that produce stress hormones. That doesn’t mean we’re stuck with stress though. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m joined by my good friend Dr. Rangan Chatterjee to look at the many sides of stress and all the actions we can take to stop it in its tracks. Dr. Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More, which Apple has announced as one of the most downloaded new podcasts of the past year. His first book, How to Make Disease Disappear, is an international bestseller all over the world and has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide in just 18 months. His most recent book, the #1 bestseller, The Stress Solution, tackles what the WHO calls the health epidemic of our time—stress. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Joovv. ButcherBox is currently offering listeners of the podcast 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon PLUS $20 off your first box. Just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy to take advantage of this great deal. Check out the Joovv products at joovv.com/farmacy. Here are more of the details from our interview: -The personal experience that changed Dr. Chatterjee’s approach to practicing medicine (6:22) -Why Dr. Chatterjee chose to focus on the topic of stress in his latest book, The Stress Solution (15:25) -The power of identifying if there is a trigger point in your week that leads to the bulk of your stress (19:26) -How stress affects your physiology and why finding meaning and purpose in your life is so important to your stress resiliency (23:53) -Managing your mindset as it relates to what you can vs what you cannot control (36:15) -How lack of downtime contributes to stress, the brain’s default mode network, and our toxic relationship to technology (38:34) -How to create a morning routine in as little as 5 minutes (48:32) -Creating new behaviors and habits (55:34) -The daily gratitude exercise Dr. Chatterjee practices with his family (57:33) -The importance of touch and intimacy (1:00:37) Find Dr. Chatterjee online at https://drchatterjee.com/ and follow him on Facebook @DrChatterjee, on Instagram @DrChatterjee, and on Twitter @drchatterjeeuk.

How You've Been Lied To About Calories, Dieting, Exercise, & Losing Weight

View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal There are several different schools of thought behind obesity and metabolic dysfunction, for example, the energy balance model or “calories-in, calories-out” perspective that many people have felt fooled by. While calories certainly are one piece, there is much more to the puzzle of weight management and metabolic health, like hormonal cascades and oxidative stress. My guest today is Dr. Robert Lustig, an author and neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He has dedicated his retirement from clinical medicine to help fix the food supply in any way he can, to reduce human suffering, and to promote a collective vision of metabolic health: protect the liver, feed the gut, support the brain.  In this episode we discuss: Is a calorie really just a calorie? (7:24) The surprising truth: All models of energy intake are a little right and a little wrong (9:20) Proven methods for reducing insulin to support weight loss (29:39) What are obesogens and how are they hijacking our metabolic health? (32:00) Reactive oxygen species and aging (and how to reduce them) (38:05) Why glucose and insulin monitoring are powerful levers for metabolic health (42:15) Summing up the facts and our beliefs around calories and weight (47:00) The cellular impact of oxidative stress and chronic stress (54:00) Monch Monch: a new fiber solution for absorbing simple sugars and preventing glucose spikes as well as increasing satiety and boosting microbial diversity (1:02:20) Food addiction in adults and children and addressing the root cause (1:10:45) What actions can we take based on scientific advances to make our lives better? (1:24:15) Why any food that feeds the gut, protects the liver, and supports the brain is a healthy food (1:33:35) Perfact and how to use it to understand what is metabolically healthy at your exact grocery store (1:40:20) This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Pendulum, ARMRA Colostrum, and Wonderfeel.  Streamline your lab orders with Rupa Health. Recognizing menopause as a gradual, uniquely personal transition rather than an abrupt change is crucial. This insight can help empower women to take proactive, supportive measures early on, ensuring a smoother journey through this natural phase of life. Today, Dr. Cindy Geyer from the UltraWellness Center joins me as we unravel the Functional Medicine perspective and approach to menopause. Our conversation highlights the crucial role of lab testing in uncovering the root causes of symptoms, paving the way for tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Moreover, we critically examine the limitations of traditional medical approaches and discuss the nuances of hormone replacement therapy, the different forms, and who may benefit the most from this treatment. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. How the Standard American Diet is Making Us Depressed, Anxious, and Inflamed

How the Standard American Diet is Making Us Depressed, Anxious, and Inflamed

View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Get Ad-free Episodes & Dr. Hyman+ Audio Exclusives It's easy to overlook the connection between what we eat and how we feel, but in a country where more than 1 in 5 adults are battling mental illness, suicide is on the rise, especially in children, and drug overdoses are at an all-time high, we need to stop and ask why? Why are we witnessing such unprecedented rates of mental illness? The answer lies not only in our modern-day, high-paced, stressful environment but at the end of our forks.  In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss why our brains are so broken, the root causes driving neuroinflammation, and how this drives disconnection between our prefrontal cortex (the adult in the room) and amygdala (our reactive, child-like brain), causing our anxiety and emotions to take over. We’ll also discuss the research clearly showing how our toxic SAD is a key driver of our mental health crisis and how you can eat (and supplement) your way out of many mental health issues.  This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth and Happy Egg. Right now, you can save 40% when you upgrade to Cozy Earth sheets. Just head over to CozyEarth.com and use code DRHYMAN. Shopping for better eggs shouldn’t be confusing. Look for the yellow carton at your local grocery store or visit happyegg.com/farmacy to find Happy Egg near you. In this episode I discuss (audio version): The state of the impact of our Standard American Diet on mental health (2:20) Why are we dealing with unprecedented rates of mental illness? (4:46) Top inflammatory foods and factors that are setting our brains on fire (6:34) What is metabolic health? (9:34) The impact of metabolic dysfunction on our brains, mood, and overall health (14:04) How is UPF driving poor metabolic health?
