Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare. Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv. I recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. It actually helps your cells produce collagen so it improves skin tone and complexion, diminishes signs of aging like wrinkles, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars. Here are more of the details from our interview: -Racial health disparity statistics and factors driving these disparities (4:37) -The Tuskegee syphilis experiment how it continues to perpetuate distrust of the healthcare system (12:50) -The cascading effects of racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and unconscious bias on minority health (15:47) -Targeted food marketing to minority populations and acknowledging the reality of food injustice (19:53) -The role of sugar and the sugar industry in driving health disparities (30:32) -How community-based conversations and initiatives can improve health literacy and outcomes (35:40) -The importance of prioritizing cultural sensitivity in creating health programs (42:43) -Economic implications of the healthcare disparities crisis and incentivizing value-based healthcare (55.47) -Multicultural specialty centers (1:01:06) -Calling for hospitals and healthcare practitioners to give voice to our national food crisis (1:06:28)

How To Address And Begin To Heal Trauma

This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, InsideTracker, and Athletic Greens. Western medicine likes to separate the mind from the body, but the truth is, they couldn’t be more connected. Starting at a young age, many of us face hardships that shape the lens through which we see the world. When left unresolved, adversity and trauma can lead to unhealthy lifestyle choices that directly influence our health. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Jim Gordon, Lewis Howes, and Dr. Gabor Maté about how trauma can be stored in the body and why putting in the effort to work through it is vital to be a happy and healthy person. His show The School of Greatness is one of the top podcasts in the world, with over 500 million downloads. He was recognized by the White House and President Obama as one of the top 100 entrepreneurs in the country under 30. A renowned speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress, and childhood development. Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection, and Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It, and has coauthored Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. Is Vegetable Oil Good Or Bad For You?

Is Vegetable Oil Good Or Bad For You?

This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Rupa Health. Many of us grew up with the message that vegetable oils are safe to use as a heart-healthy alternative over traditional saturated fats. Found at your typical grocery store, these clear, tasteless, and highly refined and processed oils include corn, soybean, canola, safflower, and sunflower oils. These highly unstable, highly inflammatory oils were given a gigantic push by advisory groups we trusted, including the American Heart Association, the National Education Cholesterol Program, the National Institutes of Health—and even our government’s own dietary guidelines. It turns out the truth about oils is not so clear cut. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk all about seed oils, why they shouldn’t be a part of your diet, and the type of fat and oils you should consume instead for optimal health.  This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Rupa Health. For a limited time, new subscribers to ButcherBox will receive free ground beef FOR LIFE. When you sign up today, ButcherBox will send you two pounds of 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef free in every box for the life of your subscription plus $20 off. Simple Methods To Reduce Stress

Simple Methods To Reduce Stress

This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Athletic Greens, and InsideTracker. How do we want to show up, especially when things get tough? This is a great question to ask ourselves as many of us have the tendency to fall quickly and easily into patterns that don’t serve us well, often causing more harm than good, both physically and mentally. There are ways we can take back control of our minds, however, so that we can let go of stress and enjoy what most matters in life. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elissa Epel, Dr. Susan David, and Gabrielle Bernstein about the power of the mind to create or reduce stress. Elissa Epel, PhD, is an internationally renowned health psychologist who is focusing on how to live well and thrive with existential stress, despite the challenges we face personally and globally. She is a professor at UCSF and the director of UCSF’s Aging, Metabolism, and Emotion Center. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and past president of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine and serves on scientific advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health. She is the coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Telomere Effect. Her latest book is The Stress Prescription: Seven Days to More Joy and Ease. Susan David, PhD, is one of the world’s leading management thinkers and an award-winning Harvard Medical School psychologist. Her Wall Street Journal bestselling book, Emotional Agility, describes the psychological skills critical to thriving in times of complexity and change. Susan’s TED Talk on the topic went viral, with over 1 million views in its first week of release. Susan is the CEO of Evidence Based Psychology, on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, a cofounder of the Institute of Coaching (a Harvard Medical School/McLean affiliate), and on the scientific advisory boards of Thrive Global and Virgin Pulse.  Gabrielle Bernstein is the New York Times bestselling author of The Universe Has Your Back and has written six additional bestsellers, including Super Attractor, which launched in September 2019. She was featured on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday as a “next-generation thought leader,” and the Oprah Winfrey Network chose Gabrielle to be part of the “Super Soul 100,” a dynamic group of 100 trailblazers whose vision and life’s work are bringing a higher level of consciousness to the world.
