How Is The Food Our Kids Are Eating Affecting Their Behavior?

How Is The Food Our Kids Are Eating Affecting Their Behavior?

Our children’s future is threatened by an achievement gap caused in large part by their inability to learn on a diet of processed foods and sugar served in schools.⁣⁣ ⁣ We are feeding our kids a diet that is making them anti-social in their behavior, promoting trouble focusing/ADD, and resulting not only in significant weight gain and health issues, but also in depression and mental health issues. ⁣ ⁣ Most schools now only have deep fryers and microwaves and serve up industrial food-like-substances prepared by corporations, not by humans. Food companies also target children and minorities with billions in marketing of the worst “foods”. We must put a stop to this. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Dr. Hyman talks about this issue and how how we can change the health of our children, ourselves, and our planet in his new book, Food Fix, out February 25. The Hidden Connection Between Gut Health & Mental Health That Therapy and Drugs Cannot Fix

View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Our global mental health crisis is growing at an exponential rate, with over half a billion people suffering from depression and anxiety; it’s time we rethink our understanding of the underlying root causes of mental health challenges. From treating thousands of patients, I’ve learned that depression is not in your head. It’s in your body. More specifically, your gut. When your gut is unhealthy and inflamed, your brain is unhealthy and inflamed. In Functional Medicine, we know that the gut and the brain are intimately connected and that the health of one directly influences the health of the other.  In today’s Health Bites episode, we’re diving into the gut-brain connection and sharing Functional Medicine tools to support your gut health and, as a result, your mood and mental health.  In this episode, I discuss: Our global mental health crisis (2:45) The gut-brain connection (4:18) The story of Marks's broken brain (5:15) Features of the gut-brain axis (8:57) Gut hormones that send signals to your brain (10:06) Role of the gut microbiota in mood and mental health (12:24) How stress negatively impacts our gut microbiome (20:14) The link between leaky gut and poor mental health (21:41) The Functional Medicine approach to fixing the gut (25:56) The 5R Program for fixing your gut health (30:09) This episode is brought to you by AG1 and Rupa Health. Autoimmune disease is a prime example: Rather than condemning patients to a lifetime of symptom management through medication, functional practitioners dig to find the “why,” to address the underlying causes with individualized, multimodal support to create lasting improvement and systemic healing. My guest today, Dr. Sara Gottfried, is a physician, researcher, author, and educator passionate about changing the way we view and treat autoimmunity.  In this episode, we discuss: What is a “trauma signature” and what is its role in autoimmunity? (5:55) Hidden autoimmunity triggers you might be surprised to learn about (21:30) The go-to test panel Sara runs on her patients (27:33) Sara’s stack for reducing cortisol and why trauma has to be considered (39:00) How Trauma biologically impacts you through the PINE system (41:40) Psychedelic therapy and other healing states of consciousness, plus Sara’s personal experience using them (48:10) What Sara wishes she told her 20-year-old self about life (1:15:45) When we dig deeper, we always find out there is more going on below the surface. They include type 1 diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and dozens of others. While your body is designed to fight off harmful things like infections, toxins, allergens, or a stress response, with autoimmune issues the body directs a hostile attack on its own joints, brain, skin, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Cynthia Li and Dr. Terry Wahls about their personal stories of working through autoimmunity and how it led them to help others using Functional Medicine. Why It is Essential to Prepare Your Bodies Before You Conceive a Baby

View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Are you, or someone you know, thinking about starting a family now or in the near future? Typically, the focus on reproductive health falls on the woman, and it begins after conception has already occurred, with minimal emphasis on diet and nutrition beyond prenatal vitamins.  However, the pre-conception window is a foundational time for both partners to take charge of their hormonal, metabolic, and overall health to ensure the healthiest sperm and egg possible for a healthy pregnancy and, most importantly, a healthy baby.  In today's episode, we're discussing the essential steps both men and women can take to foster a nurturing environment for conception. We'll delve into lab tests and tools to support hormone and reproductive wellness, the challenges and insults of our modern-day lifestyles, and how we can use Functional Medicine to take a proactive approach by embracing diet, supplements, and exercise to prime couples for a successful pregnancy while safeguarding against developmental conditions like autism and ADHD that are doubling, or even tripling from one generation to the next.  Whether you're just starting to think about having kids or already on your pregnancy path, this conversation is for you.  In this episode I discuss:  The importance of the preconception window (3:15)(5:05) How epigenetics impact the preconception window (3:58)(6:01) How parent’s diet and lifestyle imprint their children’s epigenome (5:03)(6:59) Limitations of Conventional Medicine during the preconception window (9:30)(11:26) The Functional Medicine approach to preparing to conceive (12:12) Breakdown of essential nutrients and biomarkers to ensure a healthy pregnancy (15:27) Sex hormone and bonus lab tests (21:00) Optimizing blood sugar and cardiometabolic health before and during pregnancy (22:40) Foods to eat and foods to avoid while gearing up for pregnancy (23:44) Eat your foods in the correct order (protein and fat first, then carbs (36:28) Tips for reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (38:14) The power of exercise, stress, and sleep for a healthy pregnancy (47:24) Supplement recommendations for men and women for the preconception window (51:35) This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and AG1.
