Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine with Dr. George Papanicolaou
Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Betterhelp Rates of autism have skyrocketed over the years, from an estimated 1 child in 5,000 in the 1960s and 1970s to just 1 in 54 kids today. The diagnosis of autism can be shocking and difficult for parents and families which may leave them feeling isolated, alone, helpless, and hopeless, but it doesn’t have to be that way. While we don’t have all the answers, and more research is needed to identify and validate the causes and treatment of autism, there are new signs of hope. And there is no such thing as “autism.” Rather there are “autisms”—different patterns of biological dysfunction unique to each child that result in multiple insults to the brain that all manifest with symptoms we call autism. Like every condition or illness, the key is to dig into the layers and peel the onion to discover what is really happening. It is not usually one thing but a collection of insults, toxins, and deficiencies piled on susceptible genetics that leads to autism. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating children with autism. They also share specific patient stories that they have treated. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Betterhelp. The Pegan Diet: Eat Like A Regenetarian
Our agriculture system is destructive— for the earth and for human health. The food produced by industrial agriculture leads to at least 11 million deaths a year and drives our obesity epidemic. We need to build a regenerative system—one that regenerates the earth and human health. Regenerative agriculture is more profitable for farmers, produces higher yields, and better-quality food. When we vote with our dollars and our forks by choosing regeneratively grown food, we send a message to Big Food that we want more sustainable farms. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat like a regenetarian, the ninth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” out February 23, 2021. Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story | This episode is sponsored by Joovv and AquaTru We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. When it comes to toxins one plus one does not equal two. There is a compounded effect. Chronic toxicity can wreak havoc on our health and result in symptoms ranging from fatigue to sleep and skin issues. It can also be related to autoimmune issues, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, and many other conditions. Unfortunately, conventional medicine rarely examines the role of toxic load when it comes to treating these conditions. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to assessing a patient's toxic load and supporting the body to detoxify and reduce high levels of heavy metals. They also share their personal experiences treating patients in this area. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. The Pegan Diet: Have Fats With Every Meal
Fat has been unfairly vilified for decades. The truth is that the right fats can make you healthy and lean, and can fuel your brain, while the wrong fats can be deadly. Unlike sugar, which is pretty much all bad, fats are complicated. Some people thrive on a high-fat diet, while others gain weight and struggle with abnormal cholesterol. However, even though fats are complicated, eating a fat-free diet is not good for your health. We need fats to survive. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why we should be eating fats with every meal, the seventh principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” out February 23, 2021. Addressing The Root Causes Of Childhood Obesity with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
Addressing The Root Causes Of Childhood Obesity | This episode is sponsored by Beekeepers Naturals and BLUblox Our children are unfortunately being born into a toxic food environment. Currently, a third of American kids are overweight or obese and in addition to rising rates of childhood obesity, we are also seeing a significant increase in type 2 diabetes in children. Overweight children not only face unfair stigma and judgment, but they are also more prone to battling weight issues in adulthood. Yet, food manufacturers continue to produce and peddle junk to our children that we loosely call food. The good news is that you have control over what foods you bring into your home and the type of modeling you provide for your children when it comes to what to eat. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to combating childhood obesity and they share patient cases they have treated related to childhood obesity.
