After the rise of Islam in the 7th century, it spread rapidly, establishing a foothold in Asia, Africa, and in Europe. In Europe, it established a foothold on the Iberian Peninsula. For almost 800 years, the Europeans who lived in Peninsula sought to expel them. It took the better part of a millennium, but they finally achieved their goal.
