016 Finding Your Passion And Purpose

016 Finding Your Passion And Purpose

So this week I was really inspired by the story of a young British vet who ditched everything she had at home and set up a charity in Sri Lanka working with dogs who lived on the street. Whether or not dogs are your thing, what struck me was how happy she was. She works from sun up to sun down, has no life outside of her work and very little money but doesn't care. In fact, she said she feels like the luckiest girl alive.

So what are we doing wrong? What's it all about? This episode of Inside My Wardrobe is touching on how to feel the luckiest person alive by finding your passion and purpose, making a difference in your world, collectively making a difference in our world.

I was reading a National Geographic article this week which states that the latest findings as part of a massive UN study, the first in decades of its kind, that thanks to our behaviour, 1,000,000 species may be pushed to extinction in the next few years – this holds serious consequences for our future but how often do we actually think about what we can do? It's more than just the recycling bin isn't it?!

The question is, is it too late? I remember in 2000 saying I didn't want to bring children into such a destructive world, then in 2001 flying into Gatwick airport the day 911 happened and watching the events unfurl on TV in absolute terror like everyone else thinking is the world too far gone? What can we do?

Martin Luther King is credited for saying "if the world was going to end tomorrow, I would plant an apple tree". I don't think he meant we should all be planting trees, whether or not he actually said this is irrelevant, the point is that no matter what is around the corner, we should surely all continue to invest in life rather than shrink back because of fear.

I told a story about my son going to Uzbekistan to stay with one of my best friends and her family for 3 months – I actually forgot to make the point in the podcast as I took I diversion (surprise surprise) but my point was so many people said to me at the time "oh don't send him there, aren't you afraid something might happen?" To be honest, anything could happen wherever we are in the world and I knew it would be a life changing experience for him so that's what mattered (its also a very safe country, just unfamiliar). We need to see when there is more reason to sing than to fear – AND SING! There is so much to celebrate and experience in life, there is so much good OUT there but sometimes we are so busy introspectively searching our belly buttons that we forget.

So, time to connect with what matters, find our reason and purpose and start living it!
