Dr Anna Volkmer - Talking about diversity in dementia research

Dr Anna Volkmer - Talking about diversity in dementia research

Dr Anna Volkmer, narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher - first published on 30th September 2020, being added to our podcast stream as we migrate away from website MP3 files.

Anna has always been aware of a lack of diversity in her clinical profession. She doesn't need all the fingers on one hand to count the number of bilingual people who were on her training course (Including her- German-English bilingual). If you were asked to count the number of people of a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background it would be even fewer- three to be precise. As she has gone into academia she noticed even less diversity on her career pathway. Very few BAME researchers, and even fewer BAME speech and language researchers. In fact I can tell you I have only met one (as of September 2020). Anna discusses diversity
