223. Survival on hold as VARcical decisions give LiVARpool and Palace a helping hand

April saw us a welcome revival in form for West Ham but it ended in bitter disappointment thanks to two outrageously bad VAR decisions cost us at least two points from our games against Liverpool and Crystal Palace. Thiago's double handball in the area at London Stadium wasn't even checked by VAR, while Eberechi Eze's dive in the box at Selhurst Park WAS checked, only for the officials on the day to STILL award a penalty, despite there clearly being no contact. Both decisions were bad in their own right but when you're up against incompetence of the highest order, there's not a great deal you can do. VAR was introduced to remove all human error from the game, yet all it seems to have done is install a level of incompetence and inconsistency no one really thought was possible. So we go into this week's fixtures against Man City and Man United knowing we'll likely go into the final three games of the season needing at least one win to absolutely make sure of survival. Those fixtures are against Brentford, Leeds and Leicester, so we should still be ok, although it's far from ideal.
