01: Happiness vs. Pleasure : What is the goal of life?

01: Happiness vs. Pleasure : What is the goal of life?

Most people assume life is about pursuing happiness. Dr. Lisle says that's not what your brain is actually built for. Your nervous system was designed to pursue pleasure and avoid pain, and happiness is a secondary guidance system that keeps you moving in the right direction. Confusing the two is one of the most consequential mistakes a person can make.

In this first episode, Dr. Doug Lisle introduces the foundational framework behind Beat Your Genes: that all human behavior, at its root, is driven by gene reproduction, not happiness. He explains the difference between pleasure and happiness at the neurological level, why the Stone Age brain misfires in the modern world, and how the tension between pair bonding and casual mating strategy plays out in real relationships, including why good girls are wired to be attracted to bad boys.

Key question covered: If happiness is not the goal of life, what is, and how do we use that knowledge to actually be happier?

Beat Your Genes is co-hosted by evolutionary psychologist Dr. Doug Lisle, PhD and Dr. Nathan Gershfeld, DC.
