PROFILE: Dennis Rader Part 4 Why the BTK Killer Stopped for Years

Why would a man who couldn't stop killing stop for thirteen years?

⚠️ Trigger warning: This episode discusses sexual sadism, serial murder described in the killer's own words, and self-injurious behavior. Listener discretion is advised.

Part four of a five-part series on Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer — and the one that answers the question the timeline raised. He killed four people in one morning in 1974 and then went years at a stretch doing nothing. Why?

Cathy's answer, drawn from Katherine Ramsland's interviews with him, is that he was never dormant at all.

It's also the episode that goes back to his brain. Two head injuries before adulthood. A boy kept in from recess for not drinking his milk, who spent it drawing what Ramsland calls blackboard horror places and girl traps — while reading H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper in elementary school.

In this episode:

  • The second head injury at seventeen — a car crash he lied about, and the line he uses for it: "This wreck was the start of the dark spin"
  • "Cubing" — his own word for the split, and why Rocky and Bullwinkle is in this episode
  • Over fifty-five "working projects" he was never able to carry out. Ramsland's conclusion: the quiet years were stalking years.
  • "I was on a powerful train that I could not get off. Superman could stop it, but I was not Superman."
  • "Project Lights Out" — the attack where he lost control, in his own words, and the vow he made afterward about knives
  • The hidey holes in his house, and moving everything outside it before knee surgery in case he died on the table
  • Why a compliance officer's badge in Park City was supplying him — and why he loved enforcing rules
  • His claim that the public should be grateful for his fantasies, or he'd have killed more
  • Why withholding was its own form of arousal — and why he was a masochist as much as a sadist
  • Erotic enthrallment, dopamine, and why lust killers escalate like addicts
  • Dr. Al Carlisle's three processes — fantasy, dissociation, compartmentalization — from the man who psychologically tested Ted Bundy

Clinical concepts: traumatic brain injury and behavior · erotic enthrallment and the dopamine curve · lust murder · fantasy, dissociation and compartmentalization · sadism and masochism in the same person · anticipation over consummation in addiction
