188 - The Theology Behind the Culture War

188 - The Theology Behind the Culture War

Transcendence VS Immanence One of the big problems people face today regarding religion or the notion of God, is the problem of what I would call the reality of God VS the reality of the world. This might seem abstract at first, but it ends up manifesting itself in everybody’s life, whether they’re religious or not. It ends up manifesting itself in opposites; on the one hand there is the argument of transcendence; that God is completely above the world. While on the other hand there is immanence; that God completely fills the world. Understanding this problem can help us understand some of the discourse people are using, and how we often feel trapped in extreme opposites. 187 - The Fall of Loki (Into the Multiverse)

187 - The Fall of Loki (Into the Multiverse)

The last episode of Marvel’s Loki series took a surprisingly thoughtful look at the problem of opposites. The entire series was about the challenges and opportunities of two extremes, unlimited variability on one side and absolute control and linearity on the other. This whole problem culminates into the last episode, which was brought into an almost theological realm as the entire climax of the series became a play on Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden facing the puzzle of the serpent. In this podcast episode I explore the final Loki episode and the general tendency in both the MCU and DC to move towards the trope of the multiverse in their storytelling. Just a fair warning: spoilers are definitely ahead. 186 - Fr. Andrew Damick - A Cosmic Vision of the Gospel

Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick is Chief Content Officer of Ancient Faith Ministries. He has been podcasting since 2007 and is host of the Orthodox Engagement, Amon Sûl, Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy, and Roads from Emmaus podcasts, and co-host of The Lord of Spirits and The Areopagus Podcast. Today we talk about his new book, Arise O God: The Gospel of Christ’s Defeat of Demons, Sin, and Death (see link below). It's a very succinct introduction to a more cosmic and narrative vision of the Gospel and it captures much of what him and Fr. Stephen De Young have been discussing on the Lord of Spirits Podcast. -Fr. 185 - How Kanye West Bridges Contradictions With Donda

Kanye West’s new album, named after his late mother Donda, was released on 29 August 2021 and since its release people have been asking me what I think of it and of his controversial collaboration with artists like DaBaby and Marilyn Manson. In this episode I take a look at what he seems to be trying to do with this album, looking specifically at one of his Chicago events and the song Come to Life, which includes Kim Kardashian in the music video. As you know I’ve been following Kanye West for a while, keeping an eye on his effects on culture and his conversion to Christianity. I’ve said before that he’s playing the role of the fool who is capable of bridging extremes in culture. In his own particularities he seems to be trying to reconcile many contradictions and bringing that into the symbolism of his music as well as in his collaborations. 184 - Richard Rohlin - Extreme Ethiopia

184 - Richard Rohlin - Extreme Ethiopia

This is my third and final Universal History discussion with Richard Rohlin on the topic of Ethiopia. Today we will look at several Ethiopian practices and how they ultimately manifest the two roles of Ethiopia as both the “container”, or the Ark, and the extreme. We discuss the importance of personhood in culture and the role of the saints, before we dive into different themes in Ethiopian tradition and hagiography that include a focus on the 9 Roman Saints we mentioned last time, the good thief, the saint as punisher, the scandalous aspect of salvation regarding cannibalism and the Eucharist, and much more. Enjoy. 182 - The Key to How I Interpret Scripture

182 - The Key to How I Interpret Scripture

I look at 3 stanzas in St. Ephrem’s book ‘Hymns on Paradise’, as well as some of my recent episodes about Scripture and a short text from the Gospel of St. Matthew about St. Peter walking on water. Hopefully this can give listeners a clue as to how I draw different texts together to think about symbolism in Scripture. 181 - 2mørVs - Encountering the Unexpected

2mørVs is a Flow-Fi music artist and has made music to cover audio clips of Jordan Peterson and myself. He recently made a whole album using one of my most pivotal talks titled Pentecost for the Zombie Apocalypse. The album is called Pentecost for the Zombie Apocalypse: The Musical. Today we take a look at a few music clips from the album and discuss his inspiration, how we both experienced the talk, Saint Christopher and what he means for the Church, Theosis, garments of skin, encountering the stranger and scientism. Enjoy!
