World #1 and Hall of Famer Tracy Austin

Tracy Austin was born and raised in Rolling Hills Estates California and in 1977 at the age of 14 she reached the Quarterfinals of the US Open. In 1979 she beat Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert to win the US Open, in 1980 she got to # 1 in the world, and at the 1981 US Open she defeated Martina in the final. She was inducted into the Hall of fame in 1992.


We discussed the uncertain tennis calendar moving into 2021 and the need to stay nimble, we moved through the year and Tracy shared her impressions of tennis in 2020, including Kenin's defeat of Mugaruza in Australia, Naomi Osaka's domination of the US Open as well as the nervous final between Thiem and Zverev, and Iga Swiatek's win in Paris.


We covered her career in length discussing what it was like to grow up in a tennis family where 4 of the 5 kids turned pro, and the importance of Tracy's mom to her career. We talked about the groundstroke guru Robert Lansdorp and her US Open wins. Now a broadcaster for Tennis Channel she explained how she became a broadcaster and the importance of the great Bud Collins to her career.
