Dr. Mark Gregory Karris is a compassionate and dedicated licensed marriage and family therapist, empowering individuals and couples to embark on transformative journeys to healing and self-discovery. Based in the vibrant city of San Diego, California, Mark's extensive expertise encompasses the realms of religious trauma, men's issues, and couples therapy. Mark earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Nyack College, followed by a Masters of Counseling from Alliance Graduate School of Counseling. His thirst for knowledge led him to an intensive Master of Divinity from Drew Theological School and ultimately a PsyD from Alliant International University, with a specialized focus on Marriage and Family Therapy. Mark has traveled internationally for the Red Cross, conducting workshops on stress, trauma, anger, and communication. His passion for sharing knowledge has also led him to conduct numerous workshops over the years on relationships, shame and self-criticism, self-compassion, and attachment theory and religion. Mark's extensive knowledge on religious trauma has also found its way onto dozens of podcasts and television, where he has engaged in important conversations about the significant issue this emerging topic. A celebrated author, Mark's impactful books, "Religious Refugees: (De)Constructing Toward Spiritual and Emotional Healing" and "The Diabolical Trinity: Healing Religious Trauma Due to Believing in a Wrathful God, Tormenting Hell, and a Sinful Self," have touched the lives of countless readers, offering profound insights and guidance on their path to emotional well-being. Mark's therapeutic approach is holistic, integrative, and experiential. He believes in engaging the mind, body, spirit, and emotions, drawing from a diverse range of therapeutic modalities. From psychodynamic and intensive short-term dynamic therapy to internal family systems, cognitive-behavioral, somatic-based, and spiritual approaches. He has also undergone extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, ensuring that his couples receive the most effective and empathetic care.
