十六岁那年，马友友在一个音乐夏令营中结识了长他两岁的美国女孩吉儿。经过七年的爱情长跑，在他二十三岁的那年结婚。聊起婚姻，马友友摸着下巴说：「老了，胡子这么长了！我和吉儿现在已不必说话，看一眼就知道对方在想什么了！」他说，现在与吉儿通电话，彼此只需「叹气」就好了。

吉儿曾在德国念书，也一度在哈佛任教，先后生下两个孩子后，就在家相夫教子、不再工作。马友友说：「你知道弄两个孩子有多累！我又常不在家，吉儿要当母亲又要当父亲，真难为她了！」让不让孩子学音乐？「我教他们开车，教他们吃饭。但不教音乐，如果他们有意愿就学，没有就算了，音乐只是生活的一部分！」

马友友非常强调生活。他喜欢朋友，喜欢不同的生活方式，喜欢尝试新鲜。他有许多不是音乐家的朋友，「因为从他们那儿可以知道许多音乐之外的事。」马友友对生活是很有感受的。「年纪愈大，角色愈多，责任也就愈重。以前我只是父母亲的孩子，后来我成为人家的丈夫、孩子的爸爸，又是音乐家。我要扮演的角色愈多，责任自然也愈重，但是我不排斥这些，因为这是人生过程中一定要面对的。而且我也在不同的角色中体会不同的乐趣，这就是生活。」
