Bavarian Podcast Works S5E4: Reacting to Bayern Munich’s preseason friendlies and the Mathys Tel transfer news
It was a rather short preseason for Bayern Munich having only had the chance to play two friendlies in the United States against DC United and then Manchester City. There was a bit of gap in terms of quality of the opponents, but Julian Nagelsmann was able to use the opportunities to get a good look at some different players in the squad, our new signings, and some different formations. Bayern now has less than a week until the competitive fixtures start with a trip to RB Leipzig for the DFL-Supercup on Saturday.Bayern looked like they were in the mood to score for fun, beating DC United by a scoreline of 6-2 with goals from Sadio Mane, Marcel Sabitzer, Serge Gnabry, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Thomas MUller, but they were unable to find the back of the net against Pep Guardiola’s Man City in Green Bay. Gnabry had a goal ruled out for offside, but the replay suggested Joao Cancelo was actually keeping Muller on in the buildup. It’s now also expected that Stade Renne’s Mathys Tel will become one of Bayern’s last signings of this summer window, as it looks like Bayern has agreed upon approximately 30-million Euros to sign the young striker. While he’s certainly no Robert Lewandowski, Nagelsmann has said that he does feel the youngster can become a striker that’s good for nearly 40 goals in a season once he’s had time to develop. In this episode of the Flagship show, Tom and Teddy discuss:Grading Bayern’s preseason overallThe win over DC UnitedThe loss to Manchester CityPlayers that impressed us during the preseason matchesThings we didn’t like from the two matchesNagelsmann formation choicesPredicting how productive of a signing Mathys Tel will beLearn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E3: How Robert Lewandowski leaving affects Bayern Munich (Transfers, tactics, and expectations)
So it happened. Bayern Munich have sold Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona for a fee of around €45m guaranteed plus €5m in bonuses. With his departure, Bayern lose a striker who has scored 50+ goals a season for three seasons in a row. Without him, Julian Nagelsmann will have to find new solutions for the attack, while the transfer fee raises money to reinvest into the squad.Since this is a major discussion, we got three people together for only our second-ever three-person podcast. In this episode, INNN, Tom, and Schnitzel discuss:Our initial impressions on Lewandowski leaving the club. Can the striker pairing of Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry make up for the loss of Lewy’s goals? The problems with the rumored 3-5-2 formation planned by Julian Nagelsmann.Schnitzel suggests a different formation that gives INNN conniptions. How Bayern can still operate a 4-2-3-1 with Sadio Mane as a lone striker.INNN’s take: Why the defense needs to be the focus for the upcoming season.Massive argument about formation fluidity and how to use Thomas Muller. What transfers do Bayern Munich have left in the window? Which transfers are still likely? Why Cristiano Ronaldo could still end up coming to Bayern.Closing thoughts — what are the expectations for Julian Nagelsmann in the upcoming season? Expected positions in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and the Champions League. If you guys like what you hear, PLEASE vote for us on the World Soccer Talk — Best Club Podcast award. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E2: Should Matthijs de Ligt become Bayern Munich’s record signing + Omar Richards’ departure
Matthijs de Ligt wants to join Bayern Munich - that point has been clear by the player and his representatives. At this point, Bayern just has to negotiate an appropriate transfer fee with Juventus for the defender, but it is understood that the Serie A club want between 80 and 90 million euros for him. With that said, there is a VERY real possibility that de Ligt could become Bayern’s record transfer signing if a move does, in fact, materialize. In this episode of the BPW Flagship show, Tom and Fergus discuss:If De Ligt is worth becoming Bayern’s record signing. How would De Ligt fit in Bayern’s back line in a back four system.Would he bring enough to shore up Bayern’s defense.Omar Richards departing to Nottingham Forest. How do we backup Alphonso Davies now that O. Richards is gone? Our preferred starting back four.Should the transfer window close prior to domestic seasons starting?Learn more about your ad choices.
