Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing?

In the United States, six in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic disease, like heart disease and stroke, cancer, or diabetes. These and other chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in America, and they are also a leading driver of health care costs. Today, we talk to nutrition scientist Leigh A. Frame, PhD, MHS, and gastroenterologist Janese Laster, MD, about their review of trends in dietary patterns, ultra-processed foods, chronic disease, and mortality in the U.S. Drs. Laster and Frame are the co-authors of "Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing?" The review was recently published in the journal Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology. Dr. Laster is board-certified in Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, and Obesity Medicine, Dr. Laster’s research focus is on nutrition and obesity medicine within the field of Gastroenterology. She is a recent Nestle Nutrition Fellow, member of The Obesity Society and the American College of Gastroenterology, and a Physician Nutrition Specialist diplomate. Dr. Frame is director of the GW Integrative Medicine Programs and executive director of the GW Office of Integrative Medicine and Health. She has used her wide-ranging experience in biomedical research (from wet bench to clinical research) to oversee research programs, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Parkinson's Disease Biomarkers Program. ◘ Related content Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing? https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11938-019-00246-1?shared-article-renderer The Obesity Action Coalition https://www.obesityaction.org/ The Obesity Algorithm®—a set of obesity treatment guidelines https://obesitymedicine.org/obesity-algorithm/ CDC: Overweight & Obesity https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-beyond-caloriesis-problem-processing-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
