Episode 58: The Brittany Stykes homicide

This week’s episode is about a young pregnant Ohio woman named Brittany Stykes. She had a 14 month old daughter named Aubree and was pregnant with her second child. On the evening of August 28, 2013, Brittany and Aubree were on their way to visit Brittany’s parents. It was her father David Dodson’s birthday. Brittany was driving her yellow Jeep on U.S. 68 in Brown County, Ohio. Aubree was strapped in her car seat.

Unfortunately, Brittany never made it to her father’s birthday party. Someone pulled up on her and shot her and her unborn baby to death. The killer shot baby Aubree in the head. Miraculously, she survived and has made a full recovery.

Mary and David Dodds struggle with the loss of their daughter. Brittany used to call her dad daily to check up on him. He said she was a fixture at the family home. Father and son spoke about everything and shared a close bond.

Today, the Dodson family often visits a roadside memorial marking the site where a callous killer executed Brittany. David told me that Brittany was an amazing daughter. She had never been in any trouble with the law. She also didn’t have any drug or alcohol problems. David said she got along well with everyone. No one has ever determined a motive.
