How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

There is a lot of content out these days about attention, attention spans, and distraction. What is with the seemingly dramatic deficit we have with attention? I know for myself, I seem to look for distraction and struggle to focus, even when I’m greatly interested in what I’m working on. I make it harder for myself when I have access to all my internet connected devices. I’m bringing back a conversation I had with an expert on the matter. Dr Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Amishi’s work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, The Dalai Lama's Vision Summit, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more. She is the author of the book, Peak Mind, which we discuss in this show. Amish has spent nearly 30 years researching the science of attention through extensive work with the US Military, medical professionals, elite sports teams, and more to address the issue. Her TED Talk on "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind" has nearly 6 million views. We spend every day tuned in to screens whose sole purpose is to get our attention, to the degree we now must make a focus on, “How do I get my own attention?” Our attention is in many ways, the only power we have. The only thing we have an influence and impact on, the only thing we can help or find success in or enjoy, is what we give out attention to. We all know the concept of budgeting our money, and our time. Now we’re faced with budgeting our attention, and if we can’t control our attention, all hope seems lost toward much progress in our lives. That’s why we have Amishi with us now. 467: Selling is caring and if you care you must sell

467: Selling is caring and if you care you must sell

One of Zig’s favorite quotes and mine (Kevin) is, “If you believe your product or service can fulfill a true need, it's your moral obligation to sell it.” But it’s even bigger. YOU are a product and you are on planet earth to serve. Selling is influencing. If you can’t effectively influence others in a positive way, you can’t really serve them much. Thus if you are walking through life today with no formal understanding of and training in selling/influencing, you are living life handicapped. I’ll even submit you are handicapping those you love because you are not as effective as you should be in helping them…because you aren’t listening enough, caring enough or successfully speaking their language. Not yet. But after this show, you’ll be well on your way! Thanks to Constant Contact, Upside, Blue Apron and ZipRecruiter for supporting this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. 466: Hero, a message every man needs to hear – Dr. Meg Meeker

466: Hero, a message every man needs to hear – Dr. Meg Meeker

Dr. Meg Meeker says, “In a culture that lauds mothers as the parental heads of the house, the role of fathers has become inappropriately minimized—and in some cases even ridiculed. Fathers need to see themselves the way their children see them, You are, whether you know it or not, the center of their world, the hub of the wheel that is your family, the hero they depend on. If you’re not there or not engaged, they suffer.” Those are significant statements and it’s what we dig into in this interview, along with, “Three questions your child needs you to answer”. 464: How being kind actually makes you happier – Shaunti Feldhahn

Shaunti Feldhahn is a Harvard University grad and was an analyst on Wall Street before unexpectedly becoming a social researcher, best-selling author, and popular speaker. Today, she uses her analytical skills to investigate life-changing truths about relationships. Her new, groundbreaking research-based book, “The Kindness Challenge – Thirty Days To Improve Any Relationship” delivers this evidence: Whether we thrive depends far more on how we choose to treat others than on how we ourselves are treated. The path to our happy place starts with one choice: whether or not to be kind. Especially when we really don’t want to be. This is a message you can take action on today. 463: Fueling ourselves by loving others

463: Fueling ourselves by loving others

Zig brings us a message on - you - getting to your full potential. How? By getting outside of your world of you, and looking to others. Caring for them. Being the bigger person. The result? You get your superpower. You get your just rewards. You up your performance. It’s not rocket science. You’d think it was common sense. But it’s so, so uncommon. Zig expounds on the power of personal relationships and specifically, the benefit to ourselves when we love others. Did you catch that? Not just the benefit to others when we are proactive in loving ways to them, but the benefit first, and maybe most, to ourselves. 462: Expectation hangover – Christine Hassler

462: Expectation hangover – Christine Hassler

Christine Hassler brings us guidance on how to deal with disappointment on the emotional, mental, behavioral and spiritual levels in her book, “Expectation Hangover” – Free yourself from your past, change your present & get what you really want. We led into the interview from a statement Christine gave us, “To have true, aligned and lasting performance, we need to be connected to the TRUTH of who we are. We need to let go of limited self-beliefs, turn down the voice of the inner critic, drop masks of who we think we are “supposed” to be and agendas of what we think we “should” do.” Sounds very Ziglaresque, wouldn’t you say?! We cover issues such as, ““We all face setbacks we cannot control, yet we often forget that we have a choice about how to handle those setbacks.” As well as, “Managing your expectations is not about lowering your standards.” This was a powerful and eye opening interview that provides relevant value to everyone. Guaranteed. Thanks to Varidesk, Constant Contact, ZipRecruiter, and Capterra for this support of this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

461: How to get preferential treatment

461: How to get preferential treatment

Zig Ziglar is about doing the right thing. He also…liked nice things and was unabashed about his desire to be successful and appreciating what money could buy. We can have what he had, all the success and trappings, if we’ll do what he did. Which was, “help other people get what they want.” It’s right, it’s Christ-like, and it pays off in dramatic fashion! But, it’s a massive paradigm shift. It truly is and you probably have not grasped the gravity of it. Dive in with us, this is deep water. Deep water that holds riches.
