How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

How Do I Get My Own Attention? w/ Amishi Jha

There is a lot of content out these days about attention, attention spans, and distraction. What is with the seemingly dramatic deficit we have with attention? I know for myself, I seem to look for distraction and struggle to focus, even when I’m greatly interested in what I’m working on. I make it harder for myself when I have access to all my internet connected devices. I’m bringing back a conversation I had with an expert on the matter. Dr Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. Amishi’s work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, The Dalai Lama's Vision Summit, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more. She is the author of the book, Peak Mind, which we discuss in this show. Amish has spent nearly 30 years researching the science of attention through extensive work with the US Military, medical professionals, elite sports teams, and more to address the issue. Her TED Talk on "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind" has nearly 6 million views. We spend every day tuned in to screens whose sole purpose is to get our attention, to the degree we now must make a focus on, “How do I get my own attention?” Our attention is in many ways, the only power we have. The only thing we have an influence and impact on, the only thing we can help or find success in or enjoy, is what we give out attention to. We all know the concept of budgeting our money, and our time. Now we’re faced with budgeting our attention, and if we can’t control our attention, all hope seems lost toward much progress in our lives. That’s why we have Amishi with us now. 428: Never start over and dance with fear

428: Never start over and dance with fear

In show 424 we heard from Zig Ziglar and discussed the health of responding vs reacting. I invited questions. We got some on that topic, but it also just generated a bunch of great questions on the real life issues we cover here on The Ziglar Show regarding, “How do I really…inspire my true performance? Me, in my life?” So from personal development to some business development, we cover some big issues. One I want to pull out really questioned the issue of “positive thinking” and always being optimistic. Is it just being stoic and unemotional and…an unrealistic robot or Pollyanna persona? Then folks, near the end of the show we get into the issue of work you love, working at your passions. That’s where the excerpt from the top of the show came from and I think it will shed light on the topic that will be very reassuring and freeing for most of you. 427: How does your image affect your performance?

427: How does your image affect your performance?

And what should we do about it? Zig gives us a 10-minute message on the power of what others negatively say about us…that we agree with. Then what WE say to ourselves, that we agree with. Nobody has permission to minimize who we are, and we don’t have the right to agree with minimizing statements, as children of God. To walk this out however, we must be very countercultural. The human norm veers toward negative statements. We must combat and reverse this. Listen in as Zig inspires us toward…our True Performance!   Learn more about your ad choices. 426: The Talented-Person Blind Spot – with Roy H Williams

426: The Talented-Person Blind Spot – with Roy H Williams

You have talent, and you’re probably somewhat blind to it. You minimize your talent and yourself. Which makes you…normal, according to Roy H Williams. On September 18, 2016 Roy sent out his weekly “Monday Morning Memo” and within moments of reading it, Ziglar Show host Kevin Miller contacted Roy’s camp and requested an interview as soon as possible. Days later it happened. Along with the topic at hand, they also took some majestic detours into personal and business branding, what humility actually is, and Roy’s take on following your passions. 425: Blame! Who or what?

425: Blame! Who or what?

Who or what is to blame? People and things DO happen to us. We are victims. As Tom Ziglar states in this show, feeling blame us often justified and makes all the sense in the world. We’ve often got every right to feel that way! But do we use the blame as an excuse to confine us? Or do we do the illogical thing and…let it go. And succeed…anyway?! 424: Do you respond or react to life?

424: Do you respond or react to life?

Zig asks us if we respond to life, or if we react to life? He explains the difference. Then he asks who or what do we allow to control our attitude, and therefore our actions? Who do we bequeath power to, or do we retain it for ourselves? Zig cites,  “You cannot tailor-make the situations in life, but you can tailor-make the attitudes in advance to fit that situation in life. But at the core of your ability is your own…self image.” We’re going to listen to about 11 minutes of Zig, then drill in on a few of those topics. 423: Why am I not changing?!

423: Why am I not changing?!

We as humans often skip over the foundational step. The step of “being”. It comes before “doing” and from that, the end result…having. Zig makes two big points in this show, 1) We must first be (become) the right person, and 2) We must have vision. The clip from Zig is about 12 minutes, then we spend another 20 discussing the key points. Thanks to Autodesk for their support of this show! Learn more about your ad choices.
