Today we are talking with Houston native Linda A. Anukwuem about her transition from a corporate payroll analyst to launching her international consulting firm. Linda shares how online presence can impact potential sponsors and the do's and don'ts while starting your business.

Linda A. Anukwuem is an energetic go getter and an advocate for change. She was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, and raised in Houston, TX. She attended the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. In her professional career, she worked as an accountant with Bracewell & Guiliani, LLP and United Airlines.

Linda served as the Chair for the City of Houston’s Mayor’s International Trade & Development Council for Africa (MITDC-Africa) under Mayor Annise Parker as well as chaired the Arts, Culture and Community Relations Committee; she is a working and hands on leader. MITDC-Africa was a liaison to expand the constructive dialogue between Houston’s International business community and the City government, and to jointly identify opportunities to promote the city of Houston globally, economically, educationally and its tourism. Linda has facilitated Business-to-Business networks that support the continued development of Africa. She has chaired numerous projects and events in the Houston African and international communities both locally and abroad. In addition, she participated with Sheriff Ed Gonzales transition committee regarding community relations to bridge the gap with communities in Harris County.

Ms. Linda is familiar with projects that promote the exchange of best practices for the international community. Under WeLead, an organization that focuses on community building in Africa through cultural awareness and involvement of youth and women allowed her to create a platform for international exchange supporting trade and the exchange of best practices. Her public relations experience has allowed her to gain knowledge regarding relationship building with key partners and become comfortable with managing special events. In the past, she facilitated key partnerships as an independent consultant for the Nigeria Content Investment Forum held during the well-known Offshore Technology Conference week in Houston, Texas. The work entailed managing the project from start to finish and establishing an effective system to support efforts for international trade. In addition, she has worked to support the financial infrastructure of corporate organizations. Possessing more than 10 years of experience of working in diverse financial and accounting positions. The key competencies include, but are not limited to, maintaining financial records, bank reconciliations, managing budgets and financial analysis. She has gained an understanding of accounting software and effective in explaining complex information in a comprehensible manner.

Linda’s passion and love for the African and international community inspired her to seek for an avenue to create opportunities for future leadership. Consequently, she is the founder and co-director of WeLead, an organization developed to empower young people and women for future leadership. As a community advocate for the African community, she has also become a community leader representing the Nigerian community in Houston. Because of Linda’s hard work and professional acumen, she was featured in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in Black Houston.
