I used to use the terms "small business owner" and "entrepreneur" interchangeably: "There isn't a better, there is only a different, and that is okay."
To describe the difference in the two titles I'm referencing an oldie-but-goodie 10-year-old article from Entrepreneur magazine.
"Small business owners have a great idea, while entrepreneurs have big ideas."
Small business owners add their own flavor to a blueprint that is already in place, while entrepreneurs think bigger and take more risk and chance.
Small business owners have a dependable, repeatable process with margin for profit, and with time and consistency that business will keep them employed and in the mix of the business dealings. Entrepreneurs like profit too but will often answer the little voice that says "what if we try it this way instead."
Small business owners are part of the day-to-day and have a direct hands-on role in making sure everything is completed. Entrepreneurs is thinking out far ahead and depending on a team to carry the weight of day-to-day tasks.
Small business owners are sentimental with their business while entrepreneurs are focused on scaling and selling.
A healthy economy needs both entrepreneurs and small business owners. Your own business sometimes needs you to be a mix of both. I started MKM as an entrepreneur when social media marketing wasn't a thing yet. I moved into the headspace of a small business owner to secure a dependable income and profit for my business. Now I'm enjoying a flow back to a more entrepreneurial mindset and enjoying the ride.
