The First Step to Becoming a Successful Instructional Coach with Lindsay Deacon and Angela Harkness

In this #coachbetter episode, Kim chats with Lindsay Deacon and Angela Harkness, authors of the EduCoach Survival Guide (and instructional coaches in Portland Oregon, USA). They discuss several key elements to successful coaching: understanding yourself as a coach, working with school leaders, how to effectively support teams, and the importance of building coaching relationships and having fun in your role. Lindsay and Angela share tons of stories from their own coaching experiences in Portland area school districts, as well as unique scenarios from their book, the EduCoach Survival Guide.

This conversation is a window into the learning that happens inside The Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. This academic-year-long online program will empower you to confidently apply instructional coaching strategies in any situation - from building a coaching program to being a leader in your school community. Registration for our next global cohort opens on February 21st and closes on March 14th. Find out more, and join the waiting list at edurolearning.com/coach today!

#coachbetter Introduction to Season 6: Why Should Instructional Coaching Be a Full Time Position?

#coachbetter Introduction to Season 6: Why Should Instructional Coaching Be a Full Time Position?

In our first #coachbetter Season 6 episode,  Kim unpacks a big concept that has come up a lot in conversations recently: why instructional coaching is (or should be) a full time role in schools. In our recent AAICIS (Association for the Advancement of Instructional Coaching in International Schools) landscape study of international schools we found that many of the schools that don’t have coaching programs cite the fact that other educators are fulfilling the role of coach, most likely people with coordinator roles, or middle level leaders. This finding aligns with what clients in The Coach often say about the challenge of advocating for a full time instructional coaching position - and what we hear from school leaders when they’re considering hiring coaches.  This episode can help you articulate why instructional coaching is a specific skill, and how important it is that there is time specifically devoted for coaching work (not just an add-on to an already full job description).
