We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. Claiming Control Of Your Mental Health | Part 3: (Sarah Fay) with Dr Randy James

Claiming Control Of Your Mental Health | Part 3: (Sarah Fay) with Dr Randy James

#996: I’m with co host Dr. Randy James to further discuss my previous conversations with Sarah Fay on mental pathologies. We are all on the spectrum of mental health or un health, but when does one dip over into a real disorder, and in either case, what can you do about it? In our growing mental health crisis how much is a result of clinically broken minds and how much is caused by lifestyle? Medical doctors like Randy are the front lines of most mental health issues, so how do they and the system generally diagnose and treat? How much control and responsibility do you have in your mental health. Don’t expect any easy answers as we strive to balance compassion and control. But the point is helping equip you to be more informed about the options and opportunities for yourself and those you love in regards to mental health. Learn more about your ad choices. Sarah journeyed through six major mental health diagnoses over 30 years and her book is a profound journey through the ordeals of the current psychological treatment structure we have normalized. You Are More Than A Mental Health Diagnosis | Part 1: Sarah Fay

You Are More Than A Mental Health Diagnosis | Part 1: Sarah Fay

#993: We’re taking on mental health and specifically the unprecedented increase in mental illness diagnoses. Here is my take; we are all theoretically on the spectrum of…everything. It’s human nature for instance to feel sadness. To have the feeling here and there of depression or anxiety. Brene Brown’s bestselling book right now is Atlas of the Heart and she outlines 87 different emotions that are normal and healthy. But when do we go over the line from normal to abnormal? From feeling depressed to being clinically depressed? “Having depression or an anxiety disorder?” Do we need or want an official diagnosis so we can get needed help? Or do we want to deny and boycott any such limiting label? Are we all accepting clinical diagnosis and it’s causing us to limit ourselves? This is a big issue and a big question that is affecting all of us. I’ve brought on an expert to discuss it. Sarah Fay is a writer and activist on the issue and has recently come out with her book, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Sarah from a young age displayed some unhealthy behaviors and was diagnosed, labeled, and treated. Over the next 30 years she went on to have clinical diagnoses and labels for Anorexia, Major depressive disorder, Anxiety disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Bipolar disorder, and has also dealt with alcoholism, being a compulsive exerciser, and many bouts being suicidal. You name the drug, she’s been prescribed it and taken it. Today…she is well, though still accepting of a couple diagnoses and medications, but has much to educate and warn us about regarding our current culture which has nearly half of all Americans being given an official, clinical diagnosis during their lifetime. The book is a memoir style writing of her personal experiences and her research into the medical system and how it handles and mishandles us and what the consequences are. Sarah Fay (PhD, Iowa MFA) writes for many publications, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, and The Paris Review. She’s an incredibly accomplished writer, teacher and is currently on the faculty at Northwestern University. She’s the founder of Pathological: The Movement, and you can Find Sarah at sarahfay.org. The Ziglar Show is now Self-Help(ful)

The Ziglar Show is now Self-Help(ful)

Ziglar listeners, this is a special announcement. As of May 16, 2022 The Ziglar Show will have a new name and format change. It will be called Self-Help(ful), presented by Ziglar, still hosted by me, Kevin Miller and we will be increasing to three episodes per week. Our aim is to become the #1 show in the self-improvement category and help people go beyond exposure to great messages and into actual engagement and taking action on improving ourselves.  There is the you, you used to be. Then there is the you you are now. You probably feel you have changed a lot. Now you are becoming the you you'll be in the future. The you, you want to be. And in truth, more than developing ourselves and improving ourselves, we really just want better results in our lives that come from our growing and changing. We want more success. More money. More health and wellness. More achievements. But even those things are not the real end result we want either. What we really want is...more fulfillment. More contentment. More satisfaction. More peace. One of Zig Ziglars most known quotes is one we don't really do justice to and take to heart, and it speaks directly to this. Zig said,  You have to “Be” the right kind of person first, then you must “Do” the right things before you can expect to “Have” the things in life that really matter.  That's what the Self-Help(ful) podcast, presented by Ziglar, is about. Helping you become the person who does the things that get you the things in life that really matter. To you.I'll be your guide and fellow student as I bring on the best and brightest experts and influencers in personal development and self-help and giving you more than a one shot episode with them. I'll conduct an initial episode with them to get into the heart of their story and their message. Then we'll have a part two where I expand on my past Habits episode with a Values, Motives, & Habits show to really get into what is driving these influential people, so we can gain insight into what drives us. Then I'll have a peer discussion on the topic with some cohosts, ranging from Tom Ziglar to Dr Randy James, sometimes pulling in past guests, and I may even have some listeners join me from time to time. Instead of a one episode exposure to a profound message you will get three. Soon we'll open up the Self-Help(ful) community where you can join and go even deeper. Every week we'll also be publishing a Functional Friday episode where Dr Randy James and I will give focus specifically to health and wellness from a Functional Medicine standpoint to help you get your mind and body to full capacity, as all our efforts are limited or elevated by the health and capability of our body, mind, and soul.  Thanks for tuning in to The Ziglar Show for all these years, and thanks for being with us as we walk together in this expansion to the Self-Help(ful) podcast, presented by Ziglar and journey together to better, help ourselves, become and achieve what really matters to us. Using The Tool Of Respect

Using The Tool Of Respect

#992: Respect is generally seen as something earned or demanded. In civilian life we tend to give respect to those we deem have earned it from us or we begrudgingly give it to those we feel beholden to, such as a boss. We depict the military as those in authority demanding respect regardless of anything. Is it possible and relevant to give everyone respect no matter what, and is this possible or feasible? Tom Ziglar showcases respect as the third virtue in his book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times, and once again we look at a virtue as not only the seemingly right thing to do, but the most profitable. In this episode we unpack what giving respect to anyone and everyone looks like, and what it doesn’t. I think you’ll find it frees you to healthfully and proudly give everyone respect in a way that benefits you both. It is not a zero-sum game, but a win-win you can use to elevate your social credit and personal success. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

How To Be Selfless For Personal Gain

How To Be Selfless For Personal Gain

#990: How to be selfless for personal gain sounds like click bait, which is why we take on this topic that Tom Ziglar lists as the 2nd virtue in his book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times. I wanted to confront this issue as I feel we can miss the value of it in our lives because the concept is a bit preposterous. The Bible talks about dying to self. Does anyone feel they have accomplished this? When something feels unreachable we tend to just abandon it. Selfless is the opposite of selfish, but it doesn’t mean it’s without self interest. If I have food and you don’t and I keep mine for myself, that’s pure selfishness. If I give some or even all of my food to you we’d say this is selfless. But look at the word. Selfless is less self. Not zero self. Giving my food to you makes me feel good about myself. I still get benefit. Maybe even more. And more often than not our selfless acts get noticed and what goes around comes around. The point is understanding how being selfless serves others, and us. And it’s ok that you aren’t in fact totally dead to yourself. If you read the Bible contextually you’ll see testimony that dying to self may speak more to dying to your lower, base, selfish self, and being born again to your higher, best self. There is still a self there and that is ok. This podcast is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted name in personal and professional development.
