Ep. 21 Mood-Matching Movement: Exercise for Your Mind and Body

Ep. 21 Mood-Matching Movement: Exercise for Your Mind and Body

Are you forcing yourself to move your body in ways that don’t feel right? On this micro-episode of The Legal Yogi Podcast, host Vanisha Weatherspoon invites you to rethink everything you thought you knew about exercise. What if movement wasn’t something you pushed through, but felt good, something your body asked for? In this episode, Vanisha explores how to make exercise a joyful, intuitive experience by matching your movement to your mood. You’ll learn how to break free from rigid fitness routines, how to listen to your emotional state before deciding how to move, and why celebrating movement, not just results, can be a radical act of self-care. Whether you're energized, angry, anxious, or just plain tired, there's a way to move that honors your feelings. It’s time to stop treating movement like a chore and treat it like a dynamic conversation with your body.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • (00:00) Make exercise a dynamic conversation with your body - make exercise joyful
  • (03:20) Approach movement like choosing a meal
  • (04:49) Vanisha discusses various mood-matching movements for self-care
  • (12:33) How to avoid common roadblocks to accessing your emotional state
  • (16:24) Celebrate movement rather than the results of exercise

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • You can move your body in ways that simply feel good, not based on “shoulds”, rigid fitness routines, or external expectations. It’s okay to start a workout and change your mind midway if it's not serving you.
  • Intuitive exercise is not only more enjoyable but also more sustainable. Treating movement as a dynamic conversation with your body rather than a performance makes you more likely to stick with it long-term and benefit both mentally and physically.
  • Matching your movement to your mood can enhance emotional regulation and consistency. Whether you're angry, anxious, sad, or exhausted, there's a type of movement that can meet you where you are—from power yoga and boxing to gentle walking and restorative poses.

Healing Through Mindful Movement: Shifting From Stress to Mindful Self-Compassion

ABOUT THE HOST:

Vanisha is an RYT 500 and lives in Austin, TX. She began her yoga journey in 2017 during her 1L year at Georgetown Law. The first year of law school is the hardest and is often the gateway for the bad habits that run high among legal professionals. Lawyers are at an extremely high risk of alcoholism, drug abuse and dependency, anxiety and depression, so Vanisha turned to yoga to avoid falling victim to one of the former. It was here on her mat where she found peace, which led her to want to bring this to her law school community. Vanisha became a certified instructor during the summer of her 2L year of law school and began teaching classes on Georgetown’s campus in the fall of her 3L year. Upon graduation, she obtained her 300-hour certification in 2020 and moved back to Austin, where she teaches yoga and practices law as a 5th-year associate at a law firm.
