The Battle Of The Pop Feminists
Hi! This week we've got a lot on the agenda, including but not limited to: Jessica Simpson's surprisingly fascinating (and dark) life story; the new Netflix documentary charting the 2011 case that lay the foundation for the #MeToo movement; Hugh Grant revealing all the insane shit journalists used to do to him in the '90s on Fresh Air; Sienna Miller randomly talking about Jude Law again. And THEN the big stuff. After Chidera Eggerue A.K.A 'The Slumflower' accused Florence Given of copying her work to create the year-defining feminist-lite tome 'Women Don't Owe You Pretty', feminist Instagram exploded. We try to make sense of the many different strands to this conversation, which continues to unfold this week. Then, FKA Twigs' not-so-shocking allegations of domestic abuse, emotional manipulation and sexual battery against ex Shia LaBeouf has given much-needed attention to the rising rates of domestic violence during Covid-19. We discuss the intricacies and nuances of domestic violence relationships with the manager of an Australian shelter, including how to get help if you (or a friend) needs it.As always, rate, review and subscribe. Age Of Light Martini Night
Hello our favourite people in the world and welcome to a brand spanking new episode of AWD. What's on the slate this week? The Michaela Coel x Louis Theroux crossover we didn't know we needed, why we've all misunderstood Courtney Love, and the troubling blind spot in the HBO hit series 'The Undoing'. Then it's on to Lonely Lingerie—once the world's favourite indie intimates label, now embroiled in a QAnon scandal that threatens the entire company. Alongside the fall of Philip Green's Topshop, it's more evidence that in 2020, brand founders will always be held to account for their personal values. Then it's onto 'Happiest Season', the first gay Christmas romantic comedy, starring Kristen Stewart. It isn't perfect, but does it have to be? With Ryan Murphy's 'The Prom' set to hit Netflix on Friday, we discuss the backlash around James Corden's 'offensive' perfomance, which has ignited a new debate around 'Gayface', and whether or not straight actors should play queer roles. Happy listening, and we'll see you next week ❤️.Recommendations:Michaela Coel on Grounded With Louis TherouxThe Undoing (HBO)The Dangerous Blind Spot of 'The Undoing' by Eve Gerber in The Atlantichttps://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/12/the-undoing-elenas-murder-domestic-violence-failed/617283/You're Wrong About: Courtney Love (Podcast)The Lonely descent into QAnon by David Farrier and Zoe Walker Ahwa for Ensemblehttps://www.ensemblemagazine.co.nz/articles/lonelyHappiest Season by Clea Duvall (2020)'Happiest Season' Is A Queer Fantasy—And Almost The One I Need Right Now by Makayla Philips for ELLEhttps://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a34827483/happiest-season-kristen-stewart-review/James Corden Should Have Been Banned From 'The Prom' by Richard Lawson in Vanity Fairhttps://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/12/the-prom-movie-review-james-corden Hosted on Acast. That Time Of The Month: How To Harness Your Cycle For Productivity
Hello angels and welcome back to the second installment of That Time of the Month, a biweekly three-part series all about womxn's health. A few weeks ago, we asked you some questions about your relationship to your bodies, periods, the pill and your cycle, and this week we're discussing your answers. We also touch on PMS shame and the new movement to make workplaces cater to our hormonal cycles. Already countries such as Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia recognise menstrual leave, so why isn't it being talked about - or pushed for - more? Then it's over to an expert. We enlisted registered dietitian Sara Widdowson, who, after working with women for years at a fertility and gynecology clinic, launched her own platform, Your Monthly, in 2017 to take the conversations she was having with women one-on-one in a clinic space to a wider audience to help educated women everywhere about not just nutrition but their overall health. After our chat last week, we got Sara to explain our hormones in more detail - and much better than we did, exactly how you can harness your cycle for productivity, post-pill acne and hormonal acne and combatting period shame. Enjoy! And take notes! For this series, we’ve partnered with Me., the new period care brand that has been designed to be displayed proudly and openly on your shelf—not hidden away. Me. is committed to championing a new narrative around period care through empowering campaigns, collaborations and charity partnerships, holding space for all people with periods and the issues that are important to them. I Love A Good Vibe
Hello angels. We're back and better than ever, discussing super-recent recommendations like Dawson's Creek, which Grace has finally started watching. Naturally, this is cause to revisit the Katie Holmes/Tom Cruise saga of '06, which remains the most chaotic whirlwind romance in Hollywood history. We're also talking about Meghan Markle's New York Times op-ed - aside from bringing to light more awareness about miscarriage, it's proof that Meg has an uncanny ability to intuit the moment culturally. So why are the royals wasting her? Then, Halima Aden - the first hijab-wearing supermodel - is quitting fashion, saying the industry caused her to compromise her beliefs, and we investigate the trap of being 'first'. Dakota Johnson and Cara Delevingne are both launching sex toy companies, but are suspiciously coy about using their own products. Then it's on to a column by Dolly Alderton arguing that women should focus on having 'character', rather than being beautiful. We've Become Princess Diana Conspiracy Theorists
Hello muffins and welcome to a brand spanking new AWD episode. This week, we pay a quick homage to 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' on its 10 year anniversary, and as Complex crowns it the album of the decade. In short: We miss the old Kanye. Listeners share their own stories of embarrassing stories of love-gone-wrong in your early 20s. Ivanka Trump's former bestie pulled a Natalie and penned a bitchy essay for Vanity Fair - but why do so many (white) women bristle against fully condemning Ivanka? Lena Dunham wrote an essay for Harper's about her struggles with IVF - leading to a rambling discussion from us about the inescapable questions that surround motherhood, work and fertility, and how new technology often leads to more shame and self-hatred for women. Then, it's onto the only topic we ever want to talk about: Princess Diana. The BBC have opened an investigation into whether or not her 1995 Panorama interview was obtained unethically - while a new five-part series 'You're Wrong About' investigates the myths and legends surrounding Princess Di's death. A documentary directed by Lily Allen's Dad (randomly) has turned us into conspiracy theorists - so what's the truth? And why can't we stop talking about it, 20+ years later? As always, rate, review and subscribe - and we'll see you Saturday. ❤️Disclaimer: Izzy doesn't really think the royals killed Princess Diana. That Time Of The Month: WTF Even Are Hormones? And How Do They Affect Your Mental Health
Hello, lovely angels! This week we’re bringing you the first of a three-part series all about womxn’s health. For episode one, we’re starting at the beginning: periods. We talk about where we were when we first got our period, how the lack of education and information for young women during that time is damaging and why Grace used to wear pads to school for no reason. Then, class is in session for a chat about hormones and their impact on our mental health. Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression than men, a statistic that confirms the link between female hormones and mental health. So why aren’t we talking about it? We discuss how our hormones impact our day-to-day lives, including when it comes to anxiety, depression and stress levels without us even knowing. Plus, what exactly even is PMS? And how do you know if what you’re feeling is normal? Finally, we speak to Olympic athlete Eliza McCartney about using your menstrual cycle to excel physically, why it is that so many young women drop sport when they hit puberty, and why when she was younger she wanted to avoid getting abs.For this series, we’ve partnered with Me., the new period care brand that has been designed to be displayed proudly and openly on your shelf—not hidden away. Is Harry Styles Wearing A Dress Really Groundbreaking?
Hello y'all (sorry). We're back and better than ever in our humble tipsy opinion, covering every topic you want to hear about: Porn; Harry Styles wearing a Gucci dress, and Princess Diana. Grace's new podcast recommendation sparks a 20-minute conversation about the ethics of the porn industry. Is it feminist? And does it have to be? Plus, why - when we know so many people watch porn, do we so rarely discuss it in day-to-day life? Then it's onto Harry Styles, who mildly broke the internet with his Gucci dress on the cover of Vogue. We analyse the legacy of dress-wearing men, and investigate accusations that Harry is a straight man masquerading as a queer icon for clout (and pussy). And then it's onto The Crown season four, and its portrayal of Princess Diana - how do we make sense of her legacy, 24 years on?As always, rate review and subscribe. Becoming (Super) Famous In Quarantine With Benee
Hello favourites, this week we are so excited to bring you our interview with BENEE, the New Zealand music sensation being called 'the next Lorde'. Earlier this year, BENEE's song 'Supalonely' became the TikTok anthem of lockdown, racking up a casual 500 million downloads on Spotify, and earning BENEE nods from the likes of Elton John, and slots on The Ellen Show and Jimmy Kimmel. Now, BENEE is releasing her first studio album, Hey u x, which features collaborations with Grimes and Lily Allen (casual). Hey u x is already getting glowing reviews by the likes of NME, and is out NOW, so download immediately.
