Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood
We are so excited about this week’s episode featuring Drag Race royalty, Trixie Mattell and Katya Zamolodchikova. As any Drag Race fans will know, Trixie and Katya appeared on the seventh season of the show and went on to create their own empire, becoming two of the biggest drag celebrities on the planet, with a combined 4.3 million followers on Instagram, a YouTube show called ‘UNHhhh’, a Viceland series, a makeup line, a podcast called The Bald and the Beautiful, and a New York Times best-selling book: 'Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood'. Essentially, they’re our new AWD vision board. We talk to Trixie and Katya about starting drag ‘before it was cool’, dealing with this really intense fandom - Grace included, the Instagram Face-era, the ways that classism enters drag, making - and losing -money, dating as very famous drag queens, and commercialising your friendship.Buy 'Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood' here. Do We Need Celebrities To Be Nice?
Hello everyone! Welcome to the second year of AWD, which we celebrated a week late because we had a big ol’ bust up lol. So naturally, we’re talking about friendship fights, love languages when it’s not your lover and levelling up now that we know what makes each other tick. Then it’s onto @DeuxMoi - again - because there’s been some juicy bits in the DMs this week, a lot of which includes stories of celebrities being mean to fans. So do celebrities owe us nice? Plus, the Savage x Fenty show was one of the most talked-about moments from fashion month, so why didn’t the fact that Parris Goebel, a Kiwi choreographer and dancer, was behind the whole thing make front page news in NZ? Then we discuss Chrissy Teigen’s heartbreaking announcement that she and John Legend lost their baby and the backlash to the couple sharing their news so publicly. And Trump has COVID. Is it wrong to find it funny? You can follow us on Instagram: @afterworkdrinkspodcast, @grceoneill, @isabelletruman, or join our closed Facebook group, After Work Drinks Podcast. Is Brad Pitt Even That Hot? With Raven Smith
Hello angels. This week we’re so excited to be speaking to Raven Smith. Raven is a Vogue columnist, freelance creative director, guest lecturer at Central Saint Martin’s, and the author of the best-selling book Raven’s Smith’s Trivial Pursuits. But most importantly, he’s our favourite person on Instagram. A couple of years ago his hilarious captions started to get a cult following, including us, and now he has over 100,000 followers who hang on his every post. Pretty much everyone we’ve had on this podcast, Pandora Sykes, Jessy Barden, Florence Given, Madeleine Madden, @EveryOutfitOnSATC, all follow him too, which is pretty cute if you ask us. We speak to Raven about using humour to deal with how fucked the world is, his unique perspective on classism in the UK, Brad Pitt’s face, how fucked netball is, diet - sorry, wellness - culture, the celebrities we’ll lower our dignity to get a selfie with, and whether or not it’s discrimination when women refuse to date short men (it is). You can buy Raven’s first (best-selling!) book, Raven Smith’s Trivial Pursuits here. Follow him on Instagram here. The Unsimple Life
This week, we're talking about a rumoured Harry Styles romance that we can truly get behind; the question of whether we’re all ageing right (or completely wrong); Lizzo's long-overdue Vogue cover - and the confused personal branding of post-Megxit Harry and Meghan. Then, it's onto dissecting the This Is Paris - Paris Hilton's equal parts compelling and confusing documentary/personal branding exercise. Some points made in the documentary are prescient. Hilton rightly forces the public to reframe the frankly gross perception to the release of the infamous 'sex tape'. And she shares a harrowing story of abuse from a reform school her parents sent her to as a teenager. But parts of the documentary feel... shallow. Paris wants us to see the 'real her' - but what is it? And how do we empathise with her, while still finding her lasting obsession with money and fame... uncomfortable? Can You Meditate Your Way To Better Orgasms? With Liz Goldwyn
Hello lovely humans and welcome to another weekend edition of After Work Drinks With… This week we’re speaking to the remarkable Liz Goldwyn. Liz is a member of Hollywood royalty—her grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn, helmed the iconic MGM studio and her father, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. was one of the industry’s most celebrated independent producers. But Liz took a slightly different path from the rest of her family. She has dabbled in everything. She’s directed documentaries; contributed as a writer for Vanity Fair and The New York Times; served as the New York editor of French Vogue and lectured at UCLA. She’s also worked collaboratively as an artist with brands like MAC, has curated a documentary program for LACMA, worked as a curator at Sotheby’s, she had a stint at Planned Parenthood and is a muse to designers like Zac Posen… But the thing we most love about Liz is The Sex-Ed, the a shame-free space she launched in 2018 to explore the relationship between sex and mental and physical health. The Sex-Ed deep-dives on everything from the effects of cannabis on sexual enjoyment, to how meditation leads to better orgasms, and what us vanilla heterosexuals can learn from the kink community, while the Sex-Ed podcast, hosted by Liz, features amazing interviews with artists and creators, people like David Lynch and Natasha Lyonne. She was more than open to field our many questions about sex, like—Is watching porn anti-feminist? What if our sexual fantasies are problematic? And can you really meditate your way to better orgasms? We can’t wait for you to listen and, if you do, rate, review and subscribe on iTunes. Love you all. Hosted on Acast. Is It Empowerment Or Exploitation?
Welcome everyone to the first proper AWD episode in six (!) whole months, where we’re seated in the same room drinking from the same bottle of wine and ready to tell you all about our drunken emails to our idols and a very exciting celebrity sighting. Then it’s onto the two biggest digital events of the week: the Emmys and the A-list Zoom call featuring Brad and Jen, an incredible Shia LaBeouf and a hot Henry Goulding (who Grace may or may not have once flirted with). On Friday, the iconic feminist Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away age 87. We discuss why her legacy is so important, why we all need to add Marty to our vision board, and why it’s so scary that she passed away during a Trump presidency. Last but certainly not least, Emily Ratajkowski penned a moving essay for New York Magazine, which quickly went viral, detailing the night she alleges she was sexually assaulted by a photographer and the nuances of owning her own image and power as a model and public figure. We discuss why it’s okay to want to protect Em Rata from disgusting men and support her as a woman, but also take a slight issue with what she dubs feminism. What’s the line between exploitation and empowerment? And just because you may feel empowered by something, does that make it a feminist act? Listen now for all this and more! Making Rap A Women's Sport With JessB
Hello lovely angels. Welcome to another episode of After Work Drinks With… This week we’re speaking to JessB, who, over the last couple of years, has been building a reputation as one of the most promising and thoughtful rappers to emerge out of New Zealand - a spotlight usually dominated by one of her male peers. Jess has already won a bunch of awards including the Best New Zealand Act at the 2019 MTV Music Awards. She had her Triple J debut earlier this year, has played Splendour in the Grass, Laneway and Splore - including gigs alongside Future, Grace Jones and Young Thug and some of her biggest tracks have racked up over a million streams on Spotify each. PLUS, in her spare time, Jess co-runs Filth, the coolest club night in Auckland - a safe space for queer folks and people of colour in New Zealand. Basically, she’s a fucking legend. We talk to Jess about drastically switching careers midway through your 20s, tall poppy syndrome, the Wet Ass Pussy controversy, the unique experience of being a woman in rap, and working out what it is that really fulfils you. Is It A Boy, A Girl Or A Raging Wildfire?
Up this week, we discuss the legend that is Naomi Osaka, how Katie Holmes is seemingly dating a Type-A Fuckboy and how Zac Efron found a cute Aussie girlfriend at a cafe. Then it’s onto the new Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, which proved what we already know (that we’re all addicts who need to go to phone rehab), while revealing some pretty scary insights into how much these apps know about us - and what they do with that knowledge. Plus, Man Repeller has dropped Leandra Medine and now they've dropped the 'Man' from their name, in a somewhat confusing rebrand, catered to its audience of ‘banana nut loaves and curiously spicy sweet potato fries’. You've got questions? Us too. Of course, we couldn’t ignore the biggest pop culture news of the week: Keeping Up with the Kardashians is over after 20 seasons. Why did the Kardashians stay making KUWTK for so long? And what will their new media empire look like, sans TV? And finally, a mishap at a gender reveal party in California set off a huge wildfire that has already burnt through 10,000 acres of land and caused thousands to evacuate their homes. When the woman who accidentally kicked off the gender reveal trend is telling people to stop, why are we still taking these family celebrations to such extremes? And when did our generation, as one Atlantic journalist put it, start 'over-celebrating' life events? As always, rate, review and subscribe - and we'll see you Saturday.Recommendations Raven Smith - Trivial Pursuits An American Marriage The Social Dilemma (Netflix)Keeping Up With The Kardashians Gave America Its Real First Family by Hadley Freeman in The Guardianhttps://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/sep/11/keeping-up-with-the-kardashians-kim-kylie-kendall-family'The Growing Horror Of The Gender Reveal Party' by Raven Smith in Voguehttps://www.vogue.com/article/the-growing-horror-of-the-gender-reveal-party'Are Gender Reveals Cursed?' by Taylor Lorenz in The New York Timeshttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/10/style/gender-reveal-parties-cursed.html'Why Are We Over-Celebrating Life Events' by Alia Wong in The Atlantichttps://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2018/11/gender-reveal-parties-life-events/577075/ Hosted on Acast.
