Episode #193: Gut Health 101: Everything You Need to Know About The Gut Microbiome, Probiotics, and Antibiotics With Colleen Cutcliffe

Episode #193: Gut Health 101: Everything You Need to Know About The Gut Microbiome, Probiotics, and Antibiotics With Colleen Cutcliffe

What happens to your gut health when you take antibiotics?   In this episode of the Biohacking Superhuman Performance podcast, we chat with Colleen Cutcliffe of Pendulum Life about the effects of our gut microbiome on our mental health, metabolism, energy levels, and learn to pinpoint signs of compromised gut health.   Colleen dissects the nuances of probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics, and how these elements interact in our gut. Additionally, we examine the often-underestimated impact of antibiotics on our microbiome and how it can be combated with effective strategies.   Lastly, we shift our focus to a specific strain of bacteria, known as akkermansia, and explore their role in food metabolism and mood regulation. In the same vein, we contemplate on the potential risks of long-term drug use including GLP-1, and delve into the impact of metformin on gut health.    Colleen Cutcliffe is the CEO and Co-Founder of Pendulum Therapeutics. Colleen has over 20 years of experience managing and leading teams in biotech, pharma and academia. Prior to that, Colleen was a Scientist at Elan Pharmaceuticals. Colleen completed her postdoctoral research at Northwestern’s Children’s Memorial Hospital, received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins University and received her B.A. in Biochemistry from Wellesley College.   Thank you to our sponsors for making this episode possible:   Healthgevity: Go to healthgev.com and use code LONGEVITY to save. However, there isn’t a particular diet that will make or break your gut health nor can you eat a nutrient-poor diet and expect probiotic supplements to keep your gut microbiome in good shape. Simply aiming to eat a balanced, nutrient rich diet is the way to go. While antibiotics have a negative impact on your gut health, it does come with a plus side. Given that antibiotics eliminate all bacteria – good and bad – the timeframe following an antibiotic treatment is a great time to focus on fixing your diet so you can repopulate your gut microbiome with the appropriate strains. While many of us blame our poor willpower for our cravings, it’s usually our gut microbiome that is to blame. Luckily, there are specific strains one can supplement to help increase GLP-1 and GABA production to stimulate satiety and reduce anxiety, which helps reduce cravings overall.

This could be caused by foods we eat, at what time we eat, alcohol, weight gain, and much more. Humans are naturally meant to sleep at night and be awake during the day. Thus, shift work may cause harm to your health. Knowing how to adapt your sleeping patterns so they fit your professional schedule will prevent you from dealing with the negative consequences of staying up at night.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing menopausal symptoms through diet, there are certain foods and/ or ingredients that may exacerbate these symptoms for some women and should be avoided.  Sleep disruptions are a common symptom experienced by many women during menopause. Three factors which contribute to these sleep disturbances include hormonal changes, hot flashes and night sweats, stress and lifestyle factors, and having to go to the bathroom more often. Weight-lifting is crucial in this stage of life. Women  are at risk of losing muscle mass and strength due to hormonal changes. Resistance training helps counteract muscle loss, which can lead to improved functional capacity and overall physical well-being.

Thus, finding the cause of this inflammation in the body is the first step to healing. Afterwards, turning to regenerative medicine is key for undoing the damage caused by the inflammation. Excessive nitric oxide production, often in response to inflammation, can lead to oxidative stress and damage to brain cells. This oxidative stress is believed to contribute to the development of depression and other mood disorders. Research has demonstrated that B cells play a role in tissue repair and remodeling by secreting factors that influence inflammation, fibrosis, and regeneration. Thus, if you are experiencing inflammation in the lungs, addressing the inflammation that is happening in the first place and then using B cell therapy to regenerate the lung tissue may be your best bet for healing.

Episode #186: How To Become Fitter in Less Time with REHIT Fitness Workouts with Ulrich Demplfe

Episode #186: How To Become Fitter in Less Time with REHIT Fitness Workouts with Ulrich Demplfe

Ever heard of REHIT fitness?   In this episode of the Biohacking Superhuman Performance podcast, our guest Ulrich Dempfle shares his quest to replicate this high-intensity, short-duration workout technique that requires a mere 24 minutes of your week. Ulrich shares about the nuanced science behind REHIT and the challenges he faced in finding the right equipment.   As we navigate the world of REHIT, Ulrich reveals the surprising benefits of this workout routine. From increasing your VO2 max by 12% - which is comparable to a two-year boost in healthy life expectancy - to a whopping 62% reduction in your METZ score, a risk factor for metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. We get into the nuts and bolts of REHIT, discussing how it's less mentally draining than traditional workouts, accommodates your current fitness level, and is ideal for those dealing with cortisol and adrenal fatigue.   Ulrich Dempfle is the CEO and co-founder of the Carol Bike, a game-changing exercise equipment that offers efficient workouts in just a few minutes. In this episode, we discuss the psychological resistance to shorter workouts and how the Carol Bike overcomes this by delivering effective results in a short time. It’s scientifically proven to deliver superior health and fitness benefits compared to normal exercise—in 90% less time. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 Max) is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense physical activity. It is often used as an indicator of a person's cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. Studies demonstrate that only a 12% improvement in VO2 Max is equivalent to a 2 year increase in life expectancy. Given that we lose about 10% of VO2 Max per decade as we age, this is an immense improvement. Sprints are more beneficial than traditional workouts. When you push your limits during sprints, your muscles are forced to mobilize about 25-30% of muscular glycogen—your emergency energy reserve—releasing key signalling molecules (AMPK and PGC-1a), telling your body it must get fitter and stronger. As a result, you develop more mitochondria, your blood plasma volume increases, and your heart gets stronger. The end result is an increased aerobic and anaerobic capacity.
