The Leafs Make Their Big Splash
What a weekend in the NHL! We got a big trade, some other substantial news off the ice, and it was a topsy-turvy week in the standings as well. To begin today’s podcast, Jason and Frank took a look at the Ryan O’Reilly trade that we saw on Saturday night. Kyle Dubas and company pushed their chips into the middle byu moving four draft picks, but are O’Reilly and Noel Acciari enough to push them past the first round? Frank also talked about why he has a problem with where the bar is being set in Toronto. From there, they talked about the news that Jonathan Toews is going to be staying in Chicago this season as he continues to battle an illness. The Hawks won’t be able to get anything for their Captain, but Patrick Kane may have upped his trade value with a Sunday night hat-trick against the Maple Leafs. Jason also wondered about the potential availability of Max Domi. They also looked into some teams that are going to be facing tough decisions. The New York Islanders haven’t been the dominant force some thought they’d be after acquiring Bo Horvat. The Washington Capitals are slipping and how a lot of pieces they could sell off. The Pittsburgh Penguins have games in hand on a lot of teams, but they are far from a lock to make the playoffs. It’s going to be a wild finish in the East.Tyler Yaremchuk also stopped by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about the Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, and St. Louis Blues.Episode 195 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. The status of Kane & Toews
We are now just over two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline and with plenty of news potentially coming, we decided to drop today’s episode of the podcast a day earlier than usual. To start today, Frank and Jason talked about the two big names in Chicago: Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The market is changing for these players with Toews out of the lineup due to an illness and Kane having full control of his destination. Frank explained why Toews has plummeted down his trade bait board. From there, Jason gave his thoughts on some of the new names that Frank has put forward on his board including Carson Soucy out of Seattle. They also batted around potential deadline strategies for teams like the Canucks, Oilers, and Hurricanes.Tyler Yaremchuk stopped by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by Montanas. He had some takes on the New York Rangers, Nashville Predators, the Pacific Division ahead of the deadline, and Connor McDavid’s potentially historic season. Where is Chychrun Going? PLUS: Frank breaks down his Super Bowl weekend
The guys are back with a post Super Bowl Sunday edition of the podcast. Frank was in Phoenix for the big game. To start the pod, they talked about that experience and what being in the building was like. Frank also gave his review on the half-time show and talked about his Eagles collapsing in the second half. After the Super Bowl talk, they got into the other big news that came out of Phoenix this weekend. The Coyotes held Jakob Chychrun out of the lineup for trade-related reasons on Saturday night and it seemed like a deal was about to go down but here we are on Monday morning and Chychrun is still a member of the Coyotes. What are the Coyotes looking for? Are the LA Kings really the team that’s most likely to land him? Frank gave us some insight into that. That led to some talk about the three players available in Chicago: Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Jake McCabe. Jason wondered if the Carolina Hurricanes could go all in and grab Patrick Kane. Frank thinks they might be looking at Timo Meier. They then shifted over to the Pacific Division where the Vegas Golden Knights are suddenly in the market for a goaltender. Logan Thompson is hurt but regardless of his health, they’re likely going to be looking for a goalie ahead of the deadline. Frank also thinks they’ll look to add some scoring help and wondered about Patrick Kane as a fit.Episode 192 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. Tarasenko to the Rangers... what's next?
We are now just 21 days away from the NHL Trade Deadline and we’ve now seen our second massive trade of the season. That means Jason and Frank had a lot to discuss on today’s episode of The DFO Rundown. They started things off by discussing the Vladimir Tarasenko trade. The Rangers are clearly loading up and this move makes them even more dangerous offensively. Frank thinks the trade was actually a big win for the St. Louis Blues though, who managed to get a first-round pick back in the move. With both Tarasenko and Horvat now off the board, is the market going to pick up for Timo Meier? Jason thinks he might be the most impactful player who’s moved ahead of the deadline and shared some teams he thinks should be calling Sharks GM Mike Grier looking to swing something. One of the teams he listed is even in the Pacific Division.Frank went on to share some insight into potential deadline plans for the Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild, and Winnipeg Jets before the guys welcomed in Tyler Yaremchuk for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by Montanas. To wrap up the show, Frank talked about his upcoming Super Bowl experience. He’s going to be on a plane later today and flying to Phoenix to catch his Eagles in the Super Bowl on Sunday.Episode 192 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. Horvat will stay on Long Island & We Recap All-Star Weekend
Frank and Jason are back after a little All-Star weekend hiatus and they had a lot to breakdown, starting with the Bo Horvat extension on Long Island. Does this make the trade a clear win for Lou Lamiorello and the Islanders? Or did they just overpay for a player having a career year? They also recapped All-Star weekend and talked about what went well and what the league should be looking to improve on going forward. There were issues around the length of events among other things that they discussed. We also saw a trade on Sunday night as the San Jose Sharks moved defenseman Jaycob Megna to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Frank talked about this move and Jason wondered about what else the Sharks could sell off ahead of the trade deadline. Sticking with trade talk, they also hit on the Penguins, Sabres, and Golden Knights. To wrap things up, they talked about the playoff races that are forming in either conference and which teams they're keeping an eye on heading down the stretch.3:45 - Horvat signs 9:50 - All-Star weekend17:40 - Megna deal & Sharks future 27:55 - Penguins & their first rounder 38:30 - More deadline talk Hosted on Acast. The biggest surprises & disappointments of the season
We are back together in-studio for episode 190 of The DFO Rundown. Frank Seravalli was in town for the big pond hockey tournament out at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge so he recapped how the weekend went. Tourism Jasper puts on a great tournament and the guys came back with some awesome stories. They then got into the hockey talk. The league is slowly heading into the All-Star break so Jason and Frank gave their biggest positive and negative surprises from each conference. That led into a conversation about the Seattle Kraken and whether or not their success is sustainable. Should Ron Francis push some chips into the middle at the deadline? They talked about that and discussed a spicy trade proposal. The conversation then got flipped and they dug into which teams have really failed to live up to expectations. Could the Senators become aggressive sellers and look to move on from a piece like Alex DeBrincat? Frank brought up the possibility of it.Before moving on, they did the same exercise with individual players. Frank and Jason talked about a pair of Oilers and Sabres who are having career seasons.Episode 190 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co.
