Postmenopausal Hormones: Helpful Or Harmful? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Postmenopausal Hormones: Helpful Or Harmful? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Postmenopausal Hormones: Helpful Or Harmful? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham | This episode is brought to you by AquaTru Women experiencing menopause are not destined to suffer from hot flashes, impaired mood, muscle loss, poor sleep, memory difficulties, and sexual problems. Menopausal symptoms are signs of imbalances in your sex hormones; they are not the result of mutant genes that destroy our vitality as we age. Instead, they are treatable symptoms of underlying imbalance in one of the core systems in your body. While conventional medicine commonly jumps to prescribe hormone replacement, Functional Medicine seeks to figure out the “why” – what is causing the symptoms and how can you treat the underlying problem. While sometimes this does include hormone replacement,, the important thing is to find the way to replace them that most aligns with your body. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating symptoms of menopause. They also discuss how they evaluate when to prescribe postmenopausal hormones and share patient case studies.  Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.  This episode is sponsored by AquaTru. Decolonizing Our Food System

Decolonizing Our Food System

Decolonizing Our Food System | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley Many of our sustainable farming practices actually stem from African and indigenous roots. However, the division of land, government subsidies, and financial resources that are available favor white farmers. In fact, since 1920 African-American farmers have lost over 14 million acres of land. This decline of Black, Brown, and Native farmers has had far-reaching negative impacts. It means a decline of wealth and continued generational financial hardship. It means a disconnection from history and cultural practices that connect people to the land. It also means that these communities don’t have access to the same fresh, healthy foods as predominantly white communities In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses these topics with Leah Penniman. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land.  As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs—including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people.   Find Dr. Hyman’s full-length conversation with Leah Penniman: https://DrMarkHyman.lnk.to/LeahPenniman This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley. How To Overcome Sugar Addiction with Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper

How To Overcome Sugar Addiction with Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and chili I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say they wish they had more willpower to be able to quit sugar. But here’s the thing: it’s an actual physical addiction and the food industry strives to get us hooked on sugar. So, it’s not about willpower, it’s about biochemistry. The great news is that we can reset our biochemistry and those sugar cravings and take back our health. The more you avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates (which just turn into sugar in your body) the more your body recognizes the natural sweetness in healthy foods like blueberries or even a red bell pepper.  My guests on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper, have both been through the sugar struggle, and they’re here to share their inspiring stories of overcoming the addiction to discover their most vibrant health.  Keegan is an American actor, musician, photographer, and author. He’s known for his main role as Toby Cavanaugh on the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars. Allen's passion in his younger years tended towards photography, cinematography, and other roles behind the camera. Tom is an English actor. He has appeared as Sir Percival in Merlin, Billy Bones in Black Sails, Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones, and Luther Hargreeves in Netflix’s new show The Umbrella Academy. How To Stop Stress From Controlling Your Life

How To Stop Stress From Controlling Your Life

It can often feel like stress is all around us. Stress can come in many different forms. Socioeconomic stress is a real burden for many people, as is the stress of taking care of several generations within a family, or meeting the demands of our jobs. Stress can also come in the form of bad food and poor or inadequate sleep. In all its many forms stress leads to inflammation. And inflammation actually kills the brain cells that help us make good decisions, and it makes those in the fight or flight part of the brain grow. This leads to anger and opposition and supports negative behavior and decision making. Dr. Hyman explores how stress can lead us to make unhealthy choices in his recent conversations with Drs. Rangan Chatterjee, Austin Perlmutter, and David Perlmutter. They also share information about what we can do to stop the negative effects of stress in our lives. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More, which Apple has announced as one of the most downloaded new podcasts of the past year. His first book, How to Make Disease Disappear, is an international bestseller all over the world and has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide in just 18 months. His most recent book, the #1 bestseller, The Stress Solution, tackles what the WHO calls the health epidemic of our time—stress. Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and four-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Archives of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and The Journal of Applied Nutrition. His books have been published in 34 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Dr. Perlmutter’s new book Brain Wash, co-written with his son Austin Perlmutter, MD, was just released on January 14, 2020. Dr. Austin Perlmutter is a board-certified internal medicine physician. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami and completed his internal medicine residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon. His academic focus is on understanding the decision-making process, how it is influenced by internal and external factors, and how it changes our health and illness outcomes. He is also interested in methods of improving burnout and poor mental health in the medical field. He writes for Psychology Today on his blog, The Modern Brain. What’s Wrong With The Business Of Politics And How To Fix It with Katherine Gehl | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic and Thrive Market Politics is Big Business, there’s no way around it. We’re in an extremely divisive time, and we used to be able to get things done with a much more bipartisan approach. In the 60s, voting patterns were greatly blended, but they’ve only continued to move further apart since then. This hinders things like improvements to public health in favor of private gain. You know I always want to find the space for positive change, though, so I was excited to sit down and talk about solutions for improving our current political system on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy with Katherine Gehl.  Katherine is a business leader, writer, speaker, and political innovation activist. She was president and CEO of Gehl Foods, a $250 million, high-tech food manufacturing company in Wisconsin with approximately 350 employees. Prior to joining Gehl Foods in 2007, Gehl held a range of positions in industry and government. Katherine recently authored The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy. This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic and Thrive Market. Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure with Dr. George Papanicolaou | This episode is brought to you by AirDoctor Almost a quarter of the worldwide adult population has high blood pressure or hypertension. An additional third of American adults have what is called a pre-hypertensive condition. Hypertension is a leading cause of heart disease and can lead to kidney failure, stroke, dementia, and more. Conventional medicine typically treats hypertension with medications which is generally effective in reducing risk of these complications. However, these medications frequently come with unintended side effects. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, seeks to get to and treat the root cause of whatever is causing hypertension. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating high blood pressure. They discuss how things like diet, sleep apnea, insulin resistance, and more are often the driving forces of hypertension. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss: What’s is considered normal blood pressure and why this metric is constantly changing Why high blood pressure is so dangerous The traditional medicine vs Functional Medicine approach to treating high blood pressure Why blood pressure needs to be treated How to get an effective blood pressure measurement Major causes of hypertension including insulin resistance, sleep apnea, low magnesium, low Omega-3 fats, and environmental causes Is salt an issue for high blood pressure?
