We're sure you've heard of zero knowledge proofs through our various pieces with industry leaders, but have you heard of zero trust protocols? From what we understand, its a newly coined term to describe the multi party computation tech utilized by the dWallet team. In today's presentation, we take a closer look at the evolution from the "castle and moat" model to zero trust. We discussed how traditional internet companies initially used the castle and moat model, but shifted towards zero trust due to its enhanced security. We went on to discuss how dWallet Network is reintroducing zero trust in cross-chain environments using cryptographic techniques like a new MPC protocol, 2PC MPC. 2PC MPC ensures transactions require user participation, maintaining zero trust even if validators collude. This approach is crucial for maintaining Bitcoin's security ethos while enabling advanced functionalities, such as decentralized custody solutions, staking, atomic swaps, lending, and other cross-chain functionalities. Applying zero trust in cross-chain environments is complex due to having to settle different blockchain states and the necessity to trust third parties for this state validation. We discuss how dWallet is setting the standard for what this should look like using their zero trust protocols. In today's episode we explore CoreDAO's consensus mechanism, staking offering, and technical bridging architecture. CoreDAO is aiming to separate Bitcoin’s asset value from its transactional rails, enabling higher throughput and lower cost ecosystems. This separation allows Bitcoin to be used more efficiently, particularly through bridging and HTLC atomic swapping. By introducing the Satoshi Plus consensus, CoreDAO combines Bitcoin mining, staking, and Core token staking for cryptoeconomic security. One of the best parts about our modular thesis is that it also applies to Bitcoin. We are seeing the same ideas of bringing next-gen VMs to Bitcoin scaling in the same way that we see with with Ethereum rollups. Notably, the tech hurdles to actually get an SVM rollup on bitcoin is much harder. Today we are specifically focusing on integrating the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) onto Bitcoin. This idea aims to bring the fastest programmable execution layer to Bitcoin. In our interview with Chase from Molecule, we dive deep into the technical aspects and potential of SVM. He shares insights on why the team believes next-gen VMs, like SVM, can significantly enhance Bitcoin's capabilities. One of the primary challenges with Bitcoin has been its inability to natively support smart contracts and dApps. Molecule addresses this by exploring two main solutions: sidechains and rollups (L2s). While sidechains are faster to market, they don't inherit Bitcoin's security. On the other hand, rollups settle on Bitcoin and inherit its security, though they require more R&D currently (as we've discussed thus far). The discussion also touched on the importance of a modular approach to Bitcoin due to its L1 restrictions. Technologies like OP-CAT, expected to be implemented in the next 6-12 months, will simplify complex transactions, enabling *actual* ZK rollups. The trajectory to achieving a "full rollup" on Bitcoin is a gradual process, similar to that of Ethereum rollups gradually implementing fraud proofs/zk technology. Build on Bitcoin (BoB) has taken the approach of building a product (on mainnet now) which resembles more of an hybrid optimistic rollup between Ethereum and Bitcoin L2. They have been quick to market and have built a strong community. Despite the challenges, such as the complexity of building on Bitcoin compared to other ecosystems, BoB is set on making advanced features like zk and account abstraction available over time. BoB’s approach tackles three major challenges: aligning with Bitcoin’s ecosystem, creating a real ecosystem of builders & apps, and ensuring liquidity for new projects. By leveraging both Bitcoin’s security and the Ethereum network, BoB is working to establish this balance. But, this comes with tradeoffs which we thoroughly address in this presentation. BoB’s journey is divided into several phases. Phase 1 which is already live is their optimistic Ethereum rollup. Phase 2 introduces Bitcoin PoW security through merge mining, while Phase 3 aims to transition to a Bitcoin rollup with fraud proofs (using BitVM) and potential ZK capabilities. We also discuss their OptiMine protocol, which similar to PBS, separates block production from block finalization for allowing faster finality leveraging Bitcoin's miners. This innovative approach ensures consistent block fees and enhances miner incentives for the longer term. Welcome to the first episode of our Bitcoin and Beyond presentation series. We aim to provide you with technical knowledge about the state of different Bitcoin scaling solutions. Are they sidechains? L2s? True rollups? For the first episode, we're diving into Citrea, a project focused on bringing ZK to Bitcoin with a true rollup design (using Bitcoin for data availability). We sat down with Orkun Kilic, to discuss Bitcoin’s security and ZK. Citrea is designed to use state differences and ZK proofs, making data usage more efficient and scalable from the jump. This approach overcomes the traditional limitations of Bitcoin, allowing for sophisticated onchain operations beyond simple transactions. But, is using Bitcoin for data availability really a feasible path? We asked Orkun about this and more. Citrea also introduced, Clementine, a peg mechanism which minimizes trust and ensures that BTC can be used seamlessly across different layers. If you've been following along for sometime, you've likely heard of Fluent as part of our Modular March campaign or in a previous episode. We first met Dino last year, early on in the development of their zkWasm L2, powered by a web assembly virtual machine (for execution). This has long been a part of our modular thesis, so naturally we were extremely interested in their newly launched "Blended execution" idea. In today's video, we set out to understand why blended execution networks are superior to single execution. We learned about the idea behind "taking the best parts" of modular VMs like EVM, WASM, and SVM and coexist with each other. This approach brings a new level of interoperability to the modular eco for devs, making it easier for them to leverage their own background and skills to participate in crypto.
