Understanding Gender Inequality in Nigeria with Prof Felicia Oyekanmi and Chioma Agwuegbo

This episode dives into gender inequality issues in Nigeria where women continue to face discrimination in various aspects of life. Despite efforts to enforce legal frameworks for equality, progress continues to be hindered by political interests and archaic gender norms perpetuated by culture and religion. However, it's not all doom and gloom. There have been some positive steps in the right direction, such as the passing of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015) and this is still the most educated the girl child has been. Join us as we explore the root causes of this inequality, the challenges that hinder progress, and what can be done to create a more equitable future for Nigerian women.

Prof. Felicia Oyekanmi is an academic researcher, Professor, and Head of the Department of Sociology, at the University of Lagos. She has a Ph.D. in Demography & Social Statistics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in Nigeria but the idea to follow this was first sparked by a fellowship opportunity for postgraduate studies in Demography at the University of Pennsylvania. When she moved back to Nigeria, she taught OAU and then moved to the University of Lagos where she currently resides. Her work around Demography focuses on Gender Issues, Social Welfare, and Women's Health (Particularly dealing with HIV/AIDS).

Chioma Agwuegbo is a communications strategist and women’s rights activist. She’s also the Executive Director at TechHerNG, a community that demystifies tech for women and applies digital solutions to societal problems that concern women. Chioma began advocacy with the Light Up Nigeria Movement in 2008 and has since then been a key participant in movements such as Enough is Enough and she is the convener of the State of Emergency GBV Movement (a coalition igniting citizens to advocate for an urgent, comprehensive, and sustainable response to SGBV.) Chioma serves on the boards of OXFAM International and PLAN International Nigeria.
