Original: From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper.
Translation: De mon grand-père Verus, j'ai appris les bonnes mœurs et la maîtrise de mon tempérament.

Original: From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character.
Translation: De par la réputation et le souvenir de mon père, la modestie et un caractère viril.

3)
Original: From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich.
Translation: De ma mère, j'ai hérité de la piété et de la bienfaisance, ainsi que de l'abstinence, non seulement des mauvaises actions, mais aussi des mauvaises pensées ; et de plus, d'une simplicité dans ma façon de vivre, bien loin des habitudes des riches.

Original: From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.
Translation: De mon arrière-grand-père, je n'ai pas fréquenté les écoles publiques, j'ai eu de bons professeurs à la maison et je sais qu'il faut dépenser généreusement pour de telles choses.

Original: From my governor, to be neither of the green nor of the blue party at the games in the Circus, nor a partizan either of the Parmularius or the Scutarius at the gladiators' fights; from him too I learned endurance of labour, and to want little.
Translation: De mon gouverneur, je n'ai pris parti ni pour les verts ni pour les bleus aux jeux du Cirque, ni pour le Parmularius ni pour le Scutarius aux combats de gladiateurs ; de lui aussi j'ai appris l'endurance au travail et à me contenter de peu.

Original: And to work with my own hands, and not to meddle with other people's affairs, and not to be ready to listen to slander.
Translation: Et de travailler de mes propres mains, de ne pas me mêler des affaires des autres, et de ne pas être prêt à écouter les calomnies.
