Arkansas Dad Wins Sheriff Race While Awaiting Murder Trial | Aaron Spencer Update

Aaron Spencer is now the Republican nominee for Lonoke County Sheriff in Arkansas. He's also facing second-degree murder charges. His trial was supposed to start in January. The judge was removed by the Arkansas Supreme Court forty-eight hours before it was set to begin.

Spencer shot and killed Michael Fosler in October 2024 after finding his thirteen-year-old daughter in Fosler's truck at one in the morning. Fosler was facing forty-three felony charges—sexual assault, child pornography, internet stalking of a child—all involving Spencer's daughter. He was out on fifty thousand dollars bond with orders to stay away from minors.

According to the arrest affidavit, Spencer forced Fosler's truck off the road. When Fosler allegedly grabbed the girl and prevented her from exiting, Spencer shot him fifteen times.

The defense argues justification. The state says murder.

Judge Barbara Elmore presided over both Fosler's bond hearing and Spencer's case. The Arkansas Supreme Court called her gag order a "gross abuse of discretion" in May 2025. When she imposed new restrictions before the January trial, the court removed her entirely.

Retired Judge Ralph Wilson has been assigned. A new trial date will be determined March 18.

Spencer won 53.5 percent of the primary vote. He'll face Democrat Brian Mitchell Sr. in November. Under Arkansas law, a felony conviction bars him from holding office.

The outcome of the trial will determine whether he goes to prison or becomes the sheriff of the county that charged him with murder.
