Kouri Richins: The Danger Zone—Escalation, Lethality & Getting Out Safely | Surviving the Fog Part 5

Leaving is the most dangerous time.

For victims of coercive control, the moment you start pulling away is the moment risk escalates. The relationship was never about love. It was about control.

This is Part 5 of "Surviving the Fog"—examining escalation and lethality through the Kouri Richins case. We're not diagnosing anyone. We're exploring documented patterns.

Prosecutors allege Eric was asking questions. Wanted to change his will.

Valentine's Day 2022: Eric allegedly gets sick after eating a sandwich prosecutors say Kouri bought. He recovers.

Two weeks later, five times the lethal dose of fentanyl.

If the prosecution's timeline is accurate, Eric may have been in the danger zone—the highest-risk period identified in domestic violence research.

Lethality indicators include: escalating threats, weapons access, stalking, prior strangulation, extreme possessiveness, separation intent, financial desperation.

Narcissistic collapse produces desperation and rage—not acceptance. When control is threatened, some escalate to the unthinkable.

"If I can't have you, no one can" is ownership, not love.

The danger zone is real. But so is survival. Leave strategically. Make a plan. Tell someone. Don't announce your departure.

The life you build afterward is permanent.

Kouri Richins is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
