#257 - Temple Of The Dog (1991)

A Grunge Tribute Born from Loss and Brotherhood

Let's tell the story of how Temple Of The Dog came to be. Released April 16, 1991, Temple of the Dog is one of the most emotionally charged records ever to emerge from Seattle — and one of the most unlikely. In this episode of Album Archives, host S.R. Epley explores the album that grief built: a tribute to Andrew Wood, the charismatic frontman of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in March 1990.

Chris Cornell wrote the songs. Then he called in his friends. What followed was a single recording session that brought together members of Soundgarden and a then-unknown band that would soon become Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder, making his recorded debut, trades vocals with Cornell on "Hunger Strike" in one of rock's most iconic moments. The whole thing was done in 15 days — and it sounds like it was meant to last forever.
