VFTS 8. Trauma-Informed Treatment and Training: How Collaboration Created the Kint Institute | Craig Haen

In this Voices From the Expressive Therapies Summit Episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Craig Haen. He shared the origin story of the Kint Institute, which grew out of inspired collaboration at the Expressive Therapies Summit and much more. Craig Haen, Ph.D., RDT, CGP, LCAT, FAGPA has a private practice working with children, adolescents, adults and families in White Plains, NY. He serves as faculty in the department of applied psychology at New York University and the expressive therapies doctoral program at Lesley University, teaching courses in both clinical practice and research. Craig is a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, where he co-chairs the Community Outreach Task Force, a group that responds to trauma events in diverse communities. He co-founded and serves as Program Director for the Kint Institute, which offers post-Masters clinical training in the arts and trauma treatment. His most recent book is Creative Arts-Based Group therapy with Adolescents, with Nancy Boyd Webb. In this episode, Craig shares the origin story of the Kint Institute. It was such a surprise and delight to learn that it emerged out of collaboration of a Trauma Symposium at a previous Expressive Therapies Summit event. We spent some time talking about the important role and responsibility of white identified therapists to move beyond being the "good white therapist", emphasizing shifting embodiment of "not being racist," to that of being "antiracist." Additionally, he shared about his transition from working clinically within the public sphere to private practice, how the diverse ways he practices helps to keep him challenged and allow him to pursue his passion as both a clinician and educator.
