In this Voices From The Summit 2021 Episode, guest host, Dr. Rachel Brandoff, interviews the Creative Psychotherapist Podcast host, Reina Lombardi. Dr. Brandoff was a previous guest on Episode 4 How Speaking at a Conference Can Garnish a Publishing Deal. Dr. Brandoff has been a source of enduring support and encouragement throughout Reina's career. It was the result of a conversation with Dr. Brandoff that breathed life into the idea of opening her private practice.

In this episode, they talk candidly about Reina's birthing process of creating a private practice. Moreover, they discuss how small, deliberate and consistent steps in the direction of your goals contribute to it becoming reality. They go into the work of overcoming and working through personal fears and self-limiting beliefs as central to pushing out into Entrepreneurial endeavors. During the interview, they spoke about Reina's passion for food and cooking. Dr. Brandoff suggested that Reina share her recipe for Osso Bucco in the show notes. At the 2021 LA Expressive Therapies Summit, Reina will be teaching a Masterclass on April 20, 2021 from 9AM - 4PM called Private Practice Essentials for Creative Arts Therapists: What They Don't Teach You in School. While graduate schools prepare us to provide clinical treatment, they rarely teach the necessary skills for launching and building a solo clinical practice. This primarily didactic 6-hour master class is for you if you are thinking about launching your own practice, or if you are new to the world of private practice. Participants will learn business planning basics, such as how to determine an appropriate business structure and how to estimate start-up expenses. Attention will be given to understanding the clinical relevance of having a "money mindset" in private practice, and how to calculate your desired income, as well as set your schedule and fees, based on your expense estimate. We will briefly discuss ethical and legal considerations for successful integration of telehealth into practice. Marketing is another essential skill that is important to develop—especially if you don't already have a long list of potential clients—and it's an activity that is likely the most intimidating aspect of practice-building for most. Various marketing strategies will be presented and—since we're therapists, after all—how to determine which strategy might fit best with your personality style. We will also touch on critical legal issues you'll need to consider if you are going to hang out your own shingle. Participants will leave the session with a realistic sense of what it takes to get started (and be successful) in private practice, along with practical guidelines and tools to get them headed on their practice-building journey.
