What Does the Age of Consent Actually Mean and Why Is It Different in Different Countries?

What Does the Age of Consent Actually Mean and Why Is It Different in Different Countries?

What does the age of consent actually mean?

And why is it different depending on where you are in the world?

In this episode, I explore those two questions in real time. No script, no over-preparation — just a genuine attempt to understand something that affects young people everywhere, but that most of us can’t confidently explain.

We look at how the law works, where these ages have come from, and why countries have ended up with such different answers — from 13 to 21.

Along the way, this raises bigger questions:

Are we getting this right?

Should it be higher?

Should it be lower?

Or should we be thinking about this in a completely different way?

This isn’t about giving perfect answers. It’s about starting a conversation that we should all feel more confident having — especially when the safety of young people is involved.

If this episode made you think, share it with someone else and let’s keep the conversation going.
