Part 1 : Jewish refugees deported to Mauritius - with Vanessa Calou and Dr Roni Mikel Arieli

In September 1940 1,580 Jews managed to leave Nazi occupied Europe to British Mandated Palestine and were subsequently deported to the British Colony of Mauritius. This podcast tells the lesser known history of the island of Mauritius and the Jewish refugees who were deported there as many countries around the world closed their borders on Jewish refugees who were escaping Nazism in Europe. The recording also marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation and release of the Jewish detainees from the Beau Bassin camp in Mauritius in August 1945. JHGC Education Officer, Mdu Ntuli, is in conversation with Vanessa Calou, who heads the education and guiding department at the Beau Bassin Jewish Detainees Memorial and Information Centre in Mauritius, and Dr Roni Mikel Arieli, who has done extensive research on this history.
