Heidi Beirich, Hate & Extremism Activist | Christian Nationalism’s Rising Threat to Democracy & Civil Rights

In this urgent episode, extremism expert Heidi Beirich, founder of Global Project Against Hate & Extremism joins host Kay Brown on Hot Spots to unpack the growing influence of Christian nationalism and its threat to democracy in the United States and beyond. Drawing from her organization’s report Faith as a Weapon, Beirich explains how a political movement rooted in authoritarian ideology is seeking to replace constitutional law with a narrow religious doctrine. The discussion explores how these ideas have gained power within government institutions, how they intersect with global far-right movements, and why events like January 6th marked a critical turning point. Beirich also outlines Project 2025, the systematic rollback of civil rights, and efforts to erase history and undermine democratic norms. The episode concludes with a call to action, emphasizing the power of knowledge, nonviolent protest, voting, and community engagement as essential tools for defending democracy and personal freedoms.
