Rivals on the World Stage: Trade, Empire, and Mercantilism

Rivals on the World Stage: Trade, Empire, and Mercantilism

In this episode of AP Euro in 15, Mr. Bruns explores how economic ambition and global trade turned European nations into fierce rivals between the 16th and 18th centuries. As mercantilism shaped economic thinking, European states raced to build overseas empires, control trade routes, and accumulate wealth through colonial resources.

Mr Bruns begins by examining the rise of the Atlantic trading system and the economic philosophy of mercantilism, including how trade networks linking Europe, Africa, and the Americas fueled early capitalism and intensified competition among European powers.

Next, we explore how Spain became Europe’s dominant power in the 1500s after establishing vast colonies across the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The episode discusses key developments such as the Treaty of Tordesillas, the Spanish colonial system, and the Asiento, which connected Spain’s empire to the Atlantic slave trade.

As Spanish dominance began to weaken, new Atlantic powers—England, France, and the Dutch Republic—built their own colonial networks and trading empires. Their competition for global markets and resources led to major conflicts, including the War of the Spanish Succession and the global Seven Years’ War, which reshaped the balance of power and helped establish Britain as the leading maritime empire.

By the end of the episode, you’ll understand how economic competition, mercantilism, and colonial expansion fueled rivalries among European states and transformed the Atlantic world into the center of global trade.
