==Japanese and English scripts==

Recently, I looked up something that had been on my mind.

It was the carbon footprint of Japan and Singapore.

If we look at the whole country, Japan is much bigger.

But if we look at it per person, it is a little different.

According to the data, Singapore is a little higher.

Of course, I think there are many reasons.

The size of the country is different.

The type of industry is different.

The lifestyle is also different.

But living in Singapore, there is something I often think about.

It is that the air conditioning is too cold.

Outside, it is very hot.

So when I go inside a building, I am really grateful for air conditioning.

But sometimes it is not just cool. It is cold.

When I enter a restaurant, sometimes the first thing I think is, “It’s cold.”

I sometimes feel the same in cinemas or classrooms.

When I sleep at home, I set the air conditioner to 27 or 28 degrees.

When I tell people in Singapore this, they are often surprised.

They ask me, “Isn’t that hot?”

I hear some people even set it to around 18 degrees.

When I hear that, I am quite surprised.

Eighteen degrees is too cold for me.

It is not just cool. It feels like winter.

Of course, people feel heat differently.

I think some people feel that 27 degrees is not cool at all.

I understand that.

But I feel 18 degrees may be a little extreme.

When I ask students in Singapore, they often say this.

“If it is not this cold, I cannot stand it.”

“Twenty-seven degrees is almost the same as outside.”

I can understand that feeling a little.

When you live in a hot country, you want cold air.

Maybe because it is hot outside, people want it to be very cool inside.

But sometimes I think about this.

Maybe we are too used to very cold air conditioning.

In a hot country, we make cold rooms.

Then we get used to cold rooms.

Then, when it is just a little hot, we quickly feel we cannot stand it.

When I see carbon footprint numbers, I started thinking about small habits in daily life.

Of course, air conditioning is not the only reason.

But I think it is an easy example to think about in daily life.

Living comfortably is important.

But is that level of comfort really necessary?

Is a room so cold that it feels chilly really normal?

Living in Singapore, I often think about these things.
