Ep40 - Tattoos and Culture

Ep40 - Tattoos and Culture

Tattoos can mean fashion, memory, or something personal. But depending on the country, the same tattoo may be seen very differently. I talk about tattoos, culture, and life in Japan and Singapore.

Have you ever seen a tattoo?

I live in Singapore.

In Singapore, I feel I see tattoos more often than in Japan.

I sometimes see them on the train or when I am walking outside.

In Japanese, tattoos can also be called irezumi.

The meaning is similar.

But the nuance is a little different.

When I say tattoo, it feels a little more like fashion.

It feels like people put something they like on their body.

Once, I saw a very large tattoo.

There were many pictures of dragons and tigers on someone’s back.

I was really surprised.

I have also seen people with their partner’s name tattooed.

Some people had words they liked.

Some people had anime characters.

Even with tattoos, they are completely different depending on the person.

I feel I can see what that person likes or values.

I do not want to say tattoos are good or bad.

But if you live in Japan, I think it might be a little difficult.

Even in Japan, I see tattoos more often than before.

Even so, compared with other countries, I think they are still not common.

For example, in Japan, there can be problems when entering hot springs.

Some hot springs do not allow people with tattoos.

I have heard that some places allow small tattoos if you cover them with tape.

But that does not mean it is okay everywhere.

I like hot springs.

So if I thought I might not be able to enter hot springs anymore, that would be quite hard for me.

There may also be problems when looking for work.

If a tattoo is visible on the neck, hands, or face, people at a company may sometimes worry.

This may be the same in Singapore.

But I feel it is stronger in Japan.

I do not have a tattoo.

And I will not get one in the future.

But for people who have tattoos, they may be something very important.

But depending on the place, there may also be inconvenient things.

The way we see the same thing changes depending on the culture or country.

That is interesting, isn’t it?

What do you think about tattoos?
